The New River Valley was chosen by early railroad surveyors in Virginia to reach the West and to tap the rich coalfields of West Virginia. Several railroads that took this route were consolidated in the early 1880’s to complete the coal hauling titan known as the Norfolk and Western Railway.
This program follows the former Norfolk and Western mainline between Oakvale, West Virginia and Narrows, Virginia.
Manifest and coal trains are represented, as well as double stack trains. The three year “Heartland Corridor Project”, that expanded clearances, was completed only a few days earlier, allowing stack trains along this route. Also included is the LORAM rail grinding train. Watch a mine run departing the ex Interstate Railroad yard at Andover, VA, with some hi-tech equipment.
Dan –
Hardworking trains set against a backdrop of rock cuts, tunnels and tree-covered hills … that’s the New River Route. This is a former Norfolk & Western mainline; today, NS locomotives move a steady parade of coal, manifest and intermodal trains over the line, with occasional appearances by locomotives that aren’t wearing Norfolk Southern black. Videography is solid, camera locations are well chosen and the natural lighting looks especially nice. There’s no narration, but on-screen graphics provide train, date and location information and let the sounds of the trains shine through. Well done, R-Line!
