From the late 1950s to modern updates, here are trolleys in action in three Canadian cities.
Toronto: A celebration of the Toronto Transportation Commission or TTC, one of the finest urban transit systems anywhere, filmed mostly in 1958 with some footage from 1992. Watch the double PCC cars rolling west on the Bloor St. Line en route to the Jane Loop. Peter Witt cars and PCCs travel east on the Queen Street Line to Neville Loop then west to Long Branch and to the double loops under the CNR main line. Catch glimpses of Canada’s first subway.
Montreal: Ride the most scenic trolley line in North America around the twin peaks of Montreal (Mt. Royal and Westmount). In 1958, just a few months before these lines were abandoned, a Branford Trolley Museum excursion took a multi-tiered open-air observation car – something like a gallery track inspection car but with gold filigree railings – from downtown, past the peaks to Cartierville and back. Scenes are filmed from track side, on board and from a trolley ‘chase’ car .
Ottawa: Tour downtown Ottawa under the gray spitting skies of February with line cars and snow sweepers. Then experience a brilliant sequence on the Highland line in three feet of snow flying across the empty landscape to Britannia Park with the Gatineau Hills in the distance.
Narration. Sunday River Productions programs may feature Color film, B&W film, Music, Dubbed Sound and still photos.
