Back when the 8444 got her 4-digit number, steam had not yet vanished from the Union Pacific. While mammoth “Big Boys” and decapods lay dormant awaiting the fall grain rush and the great City fleet of Streamliners whisked by, 8444 worked. This DVD salutes 8444 in spectacular excursions from Denver to Rawlins and Ogden to Green River, complete with domes and full service diners. A marvelous brass-railed, open platform 1890’s observation car brings up the rear of a glistening streamlined consist.
Explore the Dent Branch between Denver and La Salle in detail. In the finale, 8444 forges through a major blizzard on Sherman Hill in what UP upper management threatened would be her last run. But, luckily for us, she continues to steam on to the present day.

In this installment of the Sunday River Union Pacific Steam Series, the never retired Northern itself is operating on multiple specials mostly in Colorado, Wyoming, & Utah during 1961, 1963, & other later years when most of these films were recorded by Mac Owen.
One of the highlights of the show chronicles 844/4 in the Blizzard during 1971 from Cheyenne to Laramie & return.
There is also a shot of 4-6-0 number 1243, plus Big Boy 4023 at the Cheyenne depot in 1963 before it was moved to Omaha Nebraska, as well as other dead Big Boys, Challengers at the Cheyenne yard area in 1961 while 844 wore its original identity before the 1962 renumbering to 8444, not to indirectly mention “Last of the Giants”. Other road names like Southern Pacific for example is shown at Ogden, as well as meets with diesel powered Streamliners.

Would be four stars if this were twice as long. I’m not overly impressed with SRP videos, and I’m sorry to say that this one doesn’t do much to change that. But, it does have good footage. The cameo of UP #1243 is a nice bonus, and 8444 running in the snow is a nice scene. I won’t go so far as to say “don’t get this,” but there may be other, better programs than this.
