This is the Southern Pacific on the Sunset Route, from Steins on the New Mexico border to Maricopa, Arizona. This was shot pre-merger, so you’ll see some Union Pacific, but it is all run-through power. Also seen are run-through or leased units from: Conrail, SF, C&IM, BN, UP, CSX, EMD, VMV and MK. Stops along the Southeast Arizona run of the SP on this DVD include: San Simone, Olga, Wilcox, Cochise, Dragoon, Davidson Canyon, Picacho and Cow Town.

The scenery is spectacular, but it’s the variety of railroad companies and locomotive paint schemes that steals the show! The video was shot more than 25 years ago, at a time when Southern Pacific still ruled the Sunset Route. Fallen Flags and leased locomotives add to the colorful parade, building the anticipation of what surprises might be coming next. A nice snapshot of railroading from a generation ago, all preserved by Highball’s usual top-notch videography. A nice addition to any collection.

This is your average rail road video in Arizona. Lots of trains, in interesting locations. Different railroad companies add to the flavor in the pre-merger days of the SP, the UP, the BN… etc… The major thing to this video… the historical view of some Southern Pacific action. Over all…. it’s an ok video.
