We had a delightful couple of days on KCS’s fourth sub of the Gulf division. This is the north-south main line on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border over Rich Mountain. 6 axle power is the rule here, we saw SD40-2’s, SD45’s SD4OT-2’s and SDSO’s, plus some BN and Oakway run-through power on coal trains, all working hard on the grade. The tunnel motors really look spiffy in their nice new gray, red and yellow paint, and we caught several leading.

Mountain railroading at its best, and the trains are working hard! The video is now 25 years old, and this is a nice snapshot of locomotives from a generation ago; the gray KCS paint scheme is still new, and BN still has a presence on Rich Mountain. Great video from some scenic and hard-to-reach locations on the mountain. The program is only 50 minutes long, but it’s 50 minutes of great railroading!

Rich Mountain…. a high point on the KCS line crossing from Arkansas into Oklahoma. A big challenge for the railroad. Lots of interesting power lash-ups including some BNSF’s. It was nice to see the old tunnel motors at work. Great video.
