Running across North Dakota, the Jamestown Sub is a former Northern Pacific line. The line is sometimes called the “Northern Coal Route” so expect to see a lot of coal traffic! Traffic on this prairie line is mostly coal loads, and empties, running to and from the Powder River coal basin. Trains are led by SD70Ms, SD70ACE locomotives and the new GEVO. We also have a few Warbonnets thrown for variety, history and color. See big mainline action with the latest power on “Prairie Coal”.

Largely coal traffic, the Jamestown Sub hosts just enough mixed freight consists to keep you wondering what’s coming next … with some pleasant surprises along the way. The prairie setting is starkly beautiful, and grain elevators … “prairie skyscrapers” … dot the landscape and add character to the line. The video is well shot and well edited, and make this an enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes of video railfanning.

Ex-Northern Pacific mainline is a valuable line for the BNSF from Power River. But it also handles far more than coal as we see in this video. Plenty of general manifest trains also run through on the Jamestown Sub. The scenery is nice as well. Good production over all.

I have this and what I consider its companion, badlands coal – dickinson sub, both in bluray. Peter did his best with the locations here, but the geography is less inspiring than what is seen in the badlands. Bluray image is subpar. You should be able to read reporting marks on slow moving trains like you can in 7idea blurays. Weather and lighting always good, so it’s a shame the resolution is not better. Sound is dolby 2.0 digital, but it is a mono source duplicated on both tracks, not stereo. Time for an equipment upgrade, Peter!

Great Video I now want to railfan this line
