Montana Rail Link’s Mullan Pass is the crossing of the Rocky Mountains in southern Montana on the old Northern Pacific. This short section of railroad has two horseshoe curves, two spectacular trestles and Mullan Tunnel (featured in the February, 2010 Trains Magazine). MRL uses older, rebuilt power, SD4Os, SD45s, SD45-2s SD19s, GP9s, some in MRL’s dark blue and some still, in 1997, were still in previous owners’ colors. BNSF, which still uses this route for a lot of traffic, uses anything they own to haul the freight on this line – including units still in Warbonnet colors!
