This video was shot over 20 years ago – and a lot has changed in the Montreal rail scene. Many railroad classics are now “Gone Forever”! The big (and small) ALCOs and MLWs, Via Fs, FPA4s and LRCs, commuter F-units, flags, open auto racks, cabooses and hooping up orders – it is all gone now. This is a much requested redo of Highball Production’s very first program, “Montreal’s ALCOs”, completely re-edited with some never before seen footage. Taped around the Montreal area in 1988 and 1989: every train, even intermodals, has a caboose – most are flying flags.

If you love MLW’s, this is the video for you. Great footage of them at speed, and the sights and sounds are great. Not a lot of narration either, which is good IMO!

Alco’s/MLW’s are all but gone. This video is a farewell type video to these strong power horses that once ran so well in mainline action. The quality of the video is not what we are used to now, but considering when the video was originally made, it is quite acceptable. This is history, and that is very important to preserve it. Good job Highball.

They’re not totally gone forever, as big MLWs continue to live on with several shortlines, although they are indeed gone from Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. Still, despite the technical limitations of the era, this is a good video to reminisce with.

I recommend this video to somebody who like Alco/MLW in action, but this is a old production, so image quality and filming are not the best.
