The former Rio Grande route over the Rockies, now Union Pacific trackage, with winter as a backdrop. You’ll see plenty of Union Pacific, including coal trains with distributed power and AC units. It’s not all UP though: Former SP units still show up on this route, and BNSF has trackage rights. Amtrak, and the Ski train (with 3 former Amtrak F40’s painted in a Rio Grande-like scheme) also appear. Trains run through some heavy snow west of the Moffat Tunnel. At other times, it is sunshine… but at all times it is the scenic splendor of the Rocky Mountains.

A rainbow of locomotive colors, superb mountain scenery, some daunting winter weather and the Ski Train. Who could ask for anything more? The paint scheme on the Ski Train is an especially nice tribute to this line’s Rio Grande heritage. Expect Highball’s usual excellent videography, with just the right amount of narration to let the sound of hard-working trains shine through. Two hours of very enjoyable video railfanning.
