A “Trains” Magazine article called this line “Trains in a desolate landscape”. This is prior to the UP/SP merger so, we can watch the Union Pacific on the former Western Pacific between Salt Lake City and Winnemucca, including the paired track with Southern Pacific. You’ll see the Salt Flats, Wendover Hill and Arnold Loop. You can see westbounds 13 or 14 miles away, then they round the loop and head over Silver Zone Pass. Follow the line through the sage brush to Hogan tunnel, then across tine desert to Wells, Palisade Canyon and Winnemucca. Desolation, yes – but splendid desolation.

this is an interesting video to be able to see trains going up the mountains in Nevada. I like to see the CNW engines. as they are working in the mountains. I like the narration and good quality pictures.

Big time railroading in a rugged, forbidding setting. Highball does a nice job capturing the vastness of the landscape and the challenges it poses for the railroads. Union Pacific is the star, but this program is now 25 years old, and C&NW locomotives are still plentiful and looking sharp. The videography is well done, and the desert lighting is especially nice. Two great hours of railfan entertainment!

From a great variety of diesels like the SD40-2S to the more modern wide cab SD60MS plus other fallen flag road names like the Chicago and northwestern for example, this is big time railroading in the West for both people & animals (mostly seagulls). The weather for this program is mostly sunny but does include lightning storms as well.

The old Western Pacific was a challenge in the best of times. The Union Pacific does a fine job giving us a great shoe of the strength it took to pull heavy trains through this region. The beauty of the region is amaizing to see with Arnold Loop and then the Pass. Another fine production by Highball.
