Soldier Summit is the mountain grade south of Salt Lake City, on the former Denver and Rio Grande Railroad mainline between Denver and Salt Lake City. This video covers trains on both sides of the grade near Helper, and westward. Rio Grande power dominates, but we do see a newly script-lettered Southern Pacific unit leading a train eastbound. This footage was shot just after the SP – D&RGW merger. Most footage was shot in 1991, but you’ll see some 1995 action too. The 1995 action with the Utah Railway is new to the DVD version of this program! You’ll see fantastic railroad action at some great locations along the grade, including, of course, Soldier Summit itself. Originally released in 1991 as a 30 minute VHS program, this has been newly edited and brought to DVD in 2008 and now features 51 minutes of action! Now see a Utah Railway coal train, with 4 units on the front and 4 more SD40’s as mid-train helpers.

After the DRGW/SP merger, but there’s a lot of DRGW still going around. Great video, even if there isn’t much in the older section. The Utah railway carries on spiritually.

The original 1991 tape was only a half hour, but on DVD for bonus footage, there is either 1994 or 1995 action on the Utah railway.
