This program begins with a ferry move to LA, with 3751 and a pair of classic Yellow-bonnets pulling a line of empty TOFC cars. We then begin the real trip, from Hobart Yard in LA to Chicago, through nine states! Cajon Pass, Canyon Diablo, Abo Canyon, and Marceline, MO are some of the landmarks the historic train passes by. When the train reaches Topeka, we spend a few minutes at the Topeka Railroad Days, including a special appearance from Union Pacific 3985 as it helps 3751 with its switching. After we reach Chicago, despite the weather turning bad, the return trip is briefly covered and the program ends with the crew reflecting on their very long but very successful trip. For fans of the ATSF in general and/or the 3751 in particular, this is a must-have!

The L.A. to Windy City trip was a chance for 3751 to prove her mettle… and boy did she ever!!! Sure wish there would have been more opportunities to take her out across the country that far. She is one of my favorite 4-8-4 Northerns, and ALWAYS puts on quite a show. Both Greg Scholl’s coverage AND THIS Pentrex coverage are something you do not want to miss seeing at least once… maybe two… OR three times. 🙂

Steam returning to the Santa Fe mainline from Los Angeles to Chicago and back is awesome and 3751’s greatest challenge with Union Pacific 3985 at Topeka Railroad days. Even seeing a few freights rolling through the spectacular scenery.

This amazing program shows 3751’s only trip to Chicago during its entire excursion career. This trip also includes a visit to Topeka Railroad Days, and a special appearance by Union Pacific 3985.

I own the Questar version of this program, which include three bonus features of Union Pacific #3985. It’s also nice to see #3751 as it charges up hills and races along the flatlands of the Midwest.

Steam power was an amazing thing in it’s day. Big, heavy machines, high horsepower, and strong. Nothing beats the sight of a steamer puffing down the tracks, smoke flying, and sounds a banging. Santa Fe 3751 is a big 4-8-4 Northern, that was designed to work hard, pulling heavy loads. But we never see that in this video. What we see is a steam engine pulling a dozen or so cars, with the assistance of not one, but up to 3 high horsepower diesels. I realize that the steam train can not service the cars, but more than one diesel engine of that amount of power? The video itself is good. The scenery and the photography along the way is also good. Interesting to see the men working with the 3751. And to see the crowds that turned out to see the big machine. To watch this magnificent machine working in this video would be like going out to see diesels working mainline service, pulling 6 or 7 car loads.
For anyone who enjoys excursion steam, You will like this video. For anyone who likes seeing engines working hard… maybe You will want to look else where. I am not disappointed with the video itself, but I had hoped to see the engine put to work and show it’s power. That does not happen.

I own the There Goes a Train VHS and I remember watching this same locomotive throughout the intro and that is how I wanted to watch this DVD and I always wanted to see the entire excursion special.
