Climbing gently from the tidewater ports near Portland, Oregon is the Columbia River Gorge – a wide, flat-water river passage that provides access to the inland agricultural regions of Washington and Oregon and divides the two states along most of their border. It is a spot of unparalleled beauty that hosts two railroad lines: BNSF to the north and Union Pacific along the southern shore. In Columbia River Gorge Volume I, Pentrex explored the BNSF side of the Gorge, heading east from Vancouver, Washington to the arid desert mountains near the John Day Dam.

Now, in Volume 2, we jump across the river to head back west toward Portland following Union Pacific’s Portland Subdivision. We’ll visit many of the region’s best railfanning spots, such as Biggs, Celilo Park, The Dalles, Memaloose State Park, Mosier, and Hood River with the Mount Hood Scenic Railroad. We’ll travel through the Viento State Park area to Wyeth, Cascade Locks, Bonneville Dam, and the spectacular Multnomah Falls. At Troutdale, the mainline splits into two routes to Portland and we’ll visit the junction there before heading into the city.

The trains you’ll see include Canpotex unit potash trains, Spokane International mixed freights, container, grain, trailer, and stack trains, and Amtrak’s Pioneer. Motive power varies from SD40-2s to SD60Ms, SD70Ms, leased SD90MACs, Dash 40-CW, AC4400CW, GE AC6000, Geeps, and more. CP, BNSF, and C&NW power also make appearances. These images were captured from the mid 1990s to the early 2000s, giving you a chance to see some of the older and newest power in use. With its incredible scenery and nonstop parade of interesting trains and motive power, it’s no wonder UP’s Portland Sub is one of the best railroading hotspots of the nation!

In the Second part of the Columbia River Gorge series, there are a huge variety of diesels from Aces & Macs to Dash 7’s, 8’s, & 9’s to SD40-2s, SD60s, GP30s, & even Amtrak F40s.

Locations include the John Day Dam at Goff, Biggs, Celilo Park, OT Bridge, The Dam at The Dalles, Crates, Murdoch, Rowena, Mayer State Park at McClure Lake in Lyle Washington, Memaloose state park, Chatfield, Mosier, Hood River Junction, Viento State Park, Lindsey Pond, Wyeth, Cascade Locks, Bonneville Dam, Warrendale, Dodson, Multnomah Falls, Bridal State Falls, Tunnel Point, Corbett Station, & Troutdale where it has 2 alternate routes to Portland: one goes through Graham, the other goes through Kenton. At Portland, one of the grain elevators have an amazon logo on the towers. There is also a Bird’s eye view of Albina Yard.

Aside from Union Pacific, there are other road names like BNSF, Chicago & Northwestern, CSX, Southern Pacific, Amtrak (empire builder, & Pioneer Zephyr), Canadian Pacific, Santa Fe, CEFX, Oakway, Norfolk Southern, MPI, Burlington Northern (with a rare SD9 during one of the 90s flashbacks in one scene), Mt. Hood Scenic Railroad, Max Light Rail, & back at Portland Union Station, there are special appearances by Spokane Portland & Seattle 700, Sumpter Valley narrow gauge number 19, & the Mighty SP Daylight 4449 after pulling an excursion to Vancouver British Columbia & back during May of 1996 when Union Station celebrated its 100th birthday. Will Pentrex ever convert 4449’s 1996 excursion to DVD or Blu-Ray as well as the daylight’s trip to Sacramento in 1981? Only time would tell.

These scenes were filmed between 1996 & 2002 & beyond.

Awesome video on the UP Side of the Columbia River Gorge. Excellent footage and great coverage. Glad to see the old footage from 1996 in there. Can see a difference in the motive power from the old into the new. Narration is great as always, except maybe just a little too much info. Other than that the whole program is great.

Without a doubt, the Best Program covering this very scenic line. This program has the most variety of Motive Power, featuring CEFX SD90mac’s on the point of many trains, This program shows, the only footage, of true SD90MacH’s 8505 and 8521 on the point of two trains, AC6000CW’s, many SD60m’s and of course GE Widecabs, SD70M’s, and older SD40-2’s. Also seen, are two shots at a distance, C30-7’s. The Mount Hood tourist railroad is also presented. Very Good Camera work, even thought some opportunities were lost. The SD90MacH’s should have gotten more coverage, other than that, a great show.

Heavy duty railroading at it’s best in the mountains and open plateaus, The scenery is fantastic as trains follow the Columbia River south side. Lots of long/heavy trains making their way to the Pacific ports. A favorite is the Canpotex potash trains from Alberta/Saskatchewan Canada. Great video.
