Tracing the eastern banks of the upper Mississippi River is BNSF’s St. Croix Subdivision, a mostly double-tracked route providing access for a nonstop parade of traffic from La Crosse, Wisconsin to Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. Pentrex takes you across the entire sub in the late 1990s, filming throughout the seasons to bring you a unique perspective on this important, busy line. Starting at the Grande Crossing diamond in La Crosse, where BNSF crosses Canadian Pacific trackage, we follow intermodal, coal, grain, taconite, manifest, and other trains along the shores of the Mississippi. Bald Eagles are seen circling overhead, boats ply the waters, and train whistles echo off the surrounding bluffs.
With the variety of trains comes a great variety of motive power. Two Dash-9s make their maiden voyages in Heritage II paint schemes; an original GP30 is seen working the local at Bay City; three GP20s head up a grain train; even BN’s “Pulling for Freedom” locomotive is spotted. The volume and diversity is amazing. Whether the summer sun is beating down on the rails or winter’s snows are flying off them, trains and more trains keep on rolling across BNSF’s St. Croix Subdivision. Here’s a great opportunity for you to enjoy the action, with Trains Along the Upper Mississippi Volume 2!

Definitely a favorite in my collection. I have gone to this area numerous times and I never leave disappointed. It’s a beautiful area to visit especially in the later summer and fall months. I encourage anyone who has the itch to visit this area to do so. Lots of great scenery with lots of rail and water activity as well as diverse wildlife.

In part 2 which like part 1 was also released on VHS only in 1999, there is still a ton of great diesel action with old fallen flag road names like Santa Fe, Wisconsin Central, Burlington Northern with number 1991 on a taconite train, Conrail, HLCX, Chicago Belt Railway, General Motors, CSX, Canadian Pacific, & Electro-Motive Division.
Locations for part 2 include Grand Crossing at La Crosse, Sullivan, Trempealeau, Winona Junction, Lock & Dam 5A, Fountain City, Merrick State Park, Cochrane, the Dairyland Power Station in Alma with Lock & Dam 4A, Nelson, Pepin with a bald eagle, Stockholm, Maiden Rock, Bay City, Hager, Diamond Bluff, the Prescott Lift Bridge over the St. Croix River, East St. Croix, Lock & Dam 2 at Hastings neat the west side of St. Croix, & ends at Dayton’s Bluff & East Hoffman in St. Paul which is the final spot for part 1 on the Canadian Pacific side of the river.
Aside from the trains, there are also some historic paddleboats which one of them have a Caliope played on the Mississippi Queen.

I love the Upper Mississippi railroad videos. So much that I have made the trip to see the railroad action where this video was made. The region is beautiful, and the video really shows the scenic beauty. This video has lots of train action that is awesome for rail fans. And there are so many locations to enjoy the trains. One of my favorite locations is Alma Wisconsin where the trains pass under a walking bridge right beside Lock # 4, see in this video. You will not find a better video between La Crosse Wisconsin & the Twin Cities showing the BNSF.

I have watched this (as well as part I along the CP former MILW) over and over again!!! The locals call this “God’s Country” and it is easy to see why! I highly recommend visiting this location in person! Pentrex captured the BNSF during the “rainbow era” of paint schemes which add additional color. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

from the newest H2 and H1 power to the most classic GP20s, this show really was well shot, and I love the drastic inclusion of seasons between summer and winter. The BN 1991 is a great surprise and it is all just well shot. 90s and early thousands pentrex is something to be proud to own.
