Flanking the western shore of the upper Mississippi River runs Canadian Pacific’s River Subdivision, a busy main line that supports a non stop flow of traffic. Pentrex traveled the line in 1999, through hot summer days and cold winter chill to bring you the excitement of railroading in this scenic territory. Beginning at River Junction, just west of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, we follow the line to St. Paul, Minnesota. As much of the subdivision hugs the mighty Mississippi, we spot the trains against backdrops of wooded bluffs and sometimes blue, sometimes frozen waters.

Milwaukee Road and Soo Line operated this route prior to Canadian Pacific. You’ll see motive power and varied paint schemes from all three appearing frequently, such as Milwaukee Road GP40s, Soo Line SD60s, and Canadian Pacific’s AC4400s. Highlights include a candy apple red Soo Line SD40-2 and a Canadian Pacific SD40-2F “Red Barn” wearing the dual flag paint scheme, not to mention plenty of Soo Line cabooses. I&MRL trains, with trackage rights to St. Paul, also polish these rails. The I&MRL sports some of the older power, including SD9s, SD45s, and SD35s. Plus, Amtrak’s Empire Builder uses this route to and from Chicago. Plenty of trains, gorgeous scenery, great variety – that’s railroading on Canadian Pacific’s River Subdivision!

In Part 1 which was originally released on VHS only in 1999 & Converted to DVD almost 10 years later in 2008, this program contains lots of comprehensive diesel action on Canadian Pacific, Soo Line, Montana Rail Link, GATX, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Dakota Minnesota & Eastern, Santa Fe, HLCX, Burlington Northern, HATX with a unit referenced to a Savannah & Atlanta 4-6-2, GSCX, Electro Motive Division, Illinois Central, Locomotive Leasing Partners, & General Motors Plus Amtrak’s Empire Builder also appears as well.

Locations in the first part of the 2 part series include the La Crescent Swing Bridge, River Junction, Dakota, LaMoille, Winona with the Milwaukee Road’s freight & passenger depots, Tower C-K with a flashback photo of the Chicago & Northwestern Tower before it was demolished in 1989, M.C. Junction at Goodview, Minnesota City, John Latsch State Park with a bulldozer on a flatbed, Minnieska, Weaver, McCarthy Lake, Kellogg at Milepost 333, Wabasha with Soo Line Quad 4, & the boarded up roundhouse from the steam years, not to mention the film: Grumpy Old Men with Walter Mathau, Reads Landing with eagles in the winter, Maple Springs, Lake Pepin, Lake City, Frontenac with the whistle stop cafe gas station, Red Wing depot, Hastings station & Lift Bridge, West Newport, & Pig’s eye yard at St. Paul with Dayton’s Bluff & East Hoffman.

I have watched this (as well as part II along the BNSF) over and over again!!! While partial to the Milwaukee Road and SOO Line, I do enjoy the Canadian Pacific trains in this video and LOVE the scenery! The locals call this “God’s Country” and it is easy to see why! I highly recommend visiting this location in person!

Every year I plan a vacation, and I try to work some railfanning into it. A few years ago, plans were made to go the Upper Mississippi area, based on this video. My brother-in-law questioned me, saying “why go somewhere so flat”? I loaned him this production, and his attitude changed fast. The region covered in this video is anything but flat. Starting at River Jct. Minnesota, west side from La Crosse, Wisconsin and following the west bank north, we see many interesting trains. All of the companies that once operated the line that is the Canadian Pacific Railline are in this… the Milwaukee, and the SOO Line, with added appearances by I & M Rail Link, the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern, and Amtrak’s Empire Builder. There are scenes in various seasons as the trains hug the Mississippi in many places. The scenery is fantastic, the trains are excellent. There are a few shots even of the east side and some BNSF trains on the St. Croix Sub. (featured in Trains along the Upper Mississippi Vol. # 2) Who could ask for more? Mainline action at it’s finest. The producers have done a superb job putting together an excellent video for us to enjoy. This is a “must have” video. One of the best by Pentrex.
