Travel back to 1994, prior to the Santa Fe merger with Burlington Northern, and explore Santa Fe’s San Bernardino Subdivision in Southern California. Most of the trains you’ll see here are pulled by pure sets of Santa Fe power, both Super Fleet locomotives in gorgeous red-and-silver Warbonnet paint and units in classic Santa Fe blue-and-yellow colors as well. The motive power is diverse and includes GP60M, GP60B, GP50, GP39-2, GP30, GP20, GP9, SD45-2, SDF40-2, the rare 7400-class Dash 8-40B, Dash 8-40BW, and Dash 9-44CW.
Complete coverage of the San Bernardino Subdivision begins at San Bernardino and continues to Hobart Yard in Los Angeles. A scenic highlight is the single-track segment through Santa Ana Canyon, at a time when grading for two additional main tracks was underway. Trackage-rights trains are also featured. These include Union Pacific freights between San Bernardino and West Riverside, plus Amtrak and Metrolink passenger trains between Fullerton and Los Angeles. This exciting bit of history is a must-have program for all Santa Fe fans!
Two stereo soundtracks, one with the natural train sounds, the other with narration added. The viewer can switch the narration on or off at any time.

Filmed in 1994 & produced on both VHS & DVD 10 years later in 2004, the AT&SF was still showing its mixed colors of pure diesel railroading from the old school blue & yellow units to the red & silver Warbonets.
Locations throughout Southern California include San Bernardino, Rana, Colton Diamond, Santa Ana River, High Grove, Mira Loma, Downtown Riverside, Olive Wood Cemetery, Casablanca, Riverside, Corona, Prado Dam at Santa Ana Canyon with the consist being borrowed from the Orange Empire Railway Museum heading to downtown LA for Santa Fe Day on one scene, The Santa Ana Golf Course (used as a bonus feature on the DVD version), Horseshoe Bend, Esperanza, Atwood Junction, Placenta, Fullerton Junction, the connection to the Anaheim branch, Laborata, Santa Fe Springs with Oil Derricks, Los Nietos, DT Junction, Vandini, Commerce station, & Downtown Los Angeles with a visit to Hobart Yard & Tower.
Aside from the AT&SF, there are other road names like Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, San Diegan (later renamed to the Surfliner), & the since been discontinued desert wind, Metrolink Commuter Rail, Union Pacific, CSX, Southern Pacific, Chicago & Northwestern, Sperry Rail Service car 124, & Conrail.
There is also a vintage black & white film of 4-8-2 number 3726 arriving at San Bernardino with a passenger train known as the Scout.

I remember purchasing this program right when it was released in December of 2004. It was a joy to watch. I knew Santa Fe was gone. But seeing all the classic power and locations was a real treat. A lot of changes were happening in the area at the time the footage was filmed. The San Bernardino shops were in the process of being torn down, new track and signals in the process of being installed. Lot of Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Amtrak and Metrolink, even some Southern Pacific action is seen. A really nice program all around.

If your not a Santa Fe fan, thats okay, this video is very well done, informative and shows a by gone era of railroading. To only think that it was shot over 20 years ago is crazy. I really like this video.

An AWESOME capture of the ATSF at an AWESOME time in history! The San Bernadino Sub is a great piece of railroad to visit and Pentrex visited at a great time in the history of the ATSF! I had always thought that once trains on the ATSF reached San Bernadino that they were basically in LA….I was wrong! If you buy this video I strong recommend picking up the following additional titles by Pentrex because they truly are a collection:

Santa Fe to L.A. is a good video. There is lots of train action, with a wide variety of the Santa Fe roster, along with other companies, including plenty of passenger and commuter trains. The scenery is well shown for the region with the excellent hills as backdrops to the north and east of San Bernardino. The narrators do a good job telling the story of the line to Hobart Yard. And there is a few little surprises that do open the eyes of the viewer, like a “pig train”, market size pigs that is. You can even hear the pigs squealing. It’s your basic train video from Point A to Point B. Other than the “pig train”, the bonus footage shot from the Green River Golf Course is what I considered the best part of the entire movie. Looking up, watching trains roll by while golfers take little notice. Not on my favorite list, but not a disappointment either.
