The biggest steam event of 1990 took place in June when four of the nation’s largest steam locomotives met at Union Station in St. Louis, Missouri for the NRHS convention. On hand were Cotton Belt 819, Frisco 1522, Norfolk & Western 1218, and Union Pacific 844. Pentrex fielded six camera crews to capture all the exciting events this gathering produced. We’ll bring you coverage of the locomotives on their way to St. Louis, the convention excursions, and the doubleheader starring UP 844 and Frisco 1522 as they depart for home. Get ready for a two-hour steam bonanza!
We start our coverage with Frisco 1522 being readied. Then we pick up the 844 in Kansas City and follow her along the Sedalia Sub through the hills of Missouri. Next we track N&W 1218, pulling the Independence Limited, from Mt. Vernon, Illinois to St. Louis. We begin our record of the Cotton Belt 819’s inbound journey as she crosses the Mississippi over Thebes Bridge in southern Illinois.
The initial excursion sees UP 844 pulling her train to Findlay Junction and return over UP’s Pana Sub. We’re not only trackside but we take you aboard the train for a different perspective. Frisco 1522 steps up next with the first trip on its home rails in 39 years. The trek to Newburg, Missouri, and return is a rollercoaster ride over several steep grades. The last excursion, featuring Cotton Belt 819 billowing black smoke, is a one-way trip from the East St. Louis to Illmo. The final treat occurs at the close of the convention, when UP 844 and Frisco 1522 doublehead from Ewing Yard to the National Museum of Transportation at Kirkwood. You’ll see it all: four powerful locomotives steaming across beautiful countryside and over scenic bridges; captured up close, from interesting vantage points, and in great pacing sequences; multiple historic journeys taking place in the heartland of America. This is St. Louis Steam Celebration!

In the Pentrex version of the 1990 NRHS convention held in St. Louis, a quartet of steam giants operate fan trips to & from the gateway city.
Those include highlights of the ferry moves with 1218 on the independence limited from Columbus, 844 from Cheyenne Wyoming, & 819 from its birthplace in pine bluff Arkansas.
Along the way, there is also all of the excursion specials like 844 to Findlay Illinois on June 14th, 1522 to Newburg Missouri on June 16th, & a one way return trip to Pine Bluff with 819 on June 17th that the 4-8-4 has some bad oil as black smoke billows out of the funnel.
Plus there is also the one-way doubleheader with 844 & 1522 from downtown St. Louis, to the National Musuem Of Transportation in Kirkwood where 1522 would be dropped off, & 844 would continue to head home to Cheyenne.
There is also a tour of Union Station itself, & aside from Pentrex, a handful of other railroad video producers were also there on this now 35 year old event: George Redmond of diverging clear videos, Gandy Dancer Productions, Main Line Motion Pictures, Mark 1 video, & the late America By Rail co-creator Greg Scholl.
Among the 4 mainline steam giants in this program, only 844 is still operating today while the other 3 have since been put back on display: 1218 was retired in late November/early December of 1991, 819 was retired in the fall of 1993, & 1522 was retired in late September of 2002.

Great program! Lots of eastern steam stars in this one, though I personally wish we had gotten a little more of N&W 1218. The double-header between 844 and 1522 is a highlight of the program!

What else can I say but, WOW! 🙂 This almost TWO HOUR program tells you pretty much everything you have wanted to know about the 1990 NRHS Convention in beautiful St. Louis, Missouri! This was DEFINITELY an event like no other, and this Pentrex production probably has THE most complete coverage of all four locomotives… with a significant focus on the star of the show, St. Louis’ VERY OWN Frisco 4-8-2 #1522. You will see 1522 traverse home rails for the first time in many years… Quite a treat, indeed. She worked hard pulling her heavy train full of excited passengers up the legendary Rolla Hill on the way to Newburg, Missouri and return. The coverage of Union Pacific #844 and Cotton Belt #819’s travels is second-to-none as well… Lots of stack-talk, lots of smoke, and lots of exhilarating high-speed runbys make for one show you will want to pop into the DVD player over and over again on rainy days when you aren’t at work. Watch it on your “big-screen” and turn up the volume, because the sound quality makes it feel like you are actually there! It doesn’t get any better than this! This DVD is the “next best” thing to actually being there for this historic occasion. If you purchased Pentrex’s “prequel” to this, “Steam To St. Louis”, then you will want to watch these two productions back-to-back.

This program covers the both the ferry moves and the excursions during the convention. You’ll see the UP #844, N&W #1218 and Cotton Belt #819 as they pull their respective excursions to St. Louis. Then, you’ll watch as the #844, #1522 and #819 operate on excursion for the convention, before you watch the doubleheader with #844 and #1522, this is a fascinating program that belongs in your video library!!!
