Step back to 1990 and tour the entire Kansas City Southern Railway system from Kansas City, Missouri to Port Arthur, Texas and over the former Louisiana & Arkansas line from New Orleans to Shreveport and across the Texas Division towards Dallas. Thrilling action on the KCS reveals heavy coal and grain trains snaking through the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas as helpers shove hard on the rear. Manifest freights are seen grinding their way over the summit of Rich Mountain. Elsewhere locals are racing against the clock before their time expires while yard switchers toil at their unending tasks.
Every class of engine running on the KCS in early 1990 is seen in action here. Its well-known white paint scheme was transitioning to the new gray and you’ll see examples of both. In a Grande finale, a hot train with one of the KCS F-Unit slugs sprints across the rolling Texas Division. Here’s a great opportunity to revisit one of America’s favorite railways.

A comprehensive look at the Kansas City Southern as it was a generation ago. See a variety of locomotive models in different paint schemes, early ’90s train consists, and the changing geography to be found from one end of the KCS to the other. Quality camerawork captures road freights, locals and switchers working across the system. A lot has changed in railroading in the 30 years since this video was shot, and this program is a great way to keep those memories alive!

I purchased this video prior to the more recent KCS video by pentrex. This one covers the KCS system and I like it a lot. For a while, Pentrex did many videos covering railroads in general rather than a specific line, which for someone like myself is great as I like to learn about other railroads. If you have seen the MKT, or IC North/South, this is like those and is very good.

Kansas City Southern, the smallest of the Class 1’s is a vibrant railroad with plenty of action, and some very interesting railroading. In this video, we are treated to some yard work, local action, and mainline action. Throw in a few visitors like Gateway Western, and a few other shortlines with their older power, and you see a complete video at it’s finest. Up and over some Arkansas mountains, with a pusher service, some train meets, and great scenery. All of KCS’s engine types are see in action, including an old F-unit. What a treat that the other Class 1’s no longer have in service. The chemical industry is big time service in the south, and we see a lot of action in operation. Norfolf Southern and Southern Pacific power makes appearances. We even get to see a caboose still being used. I have been very pleased with the purchase of this video. An over all great video that is a must for all railfans to own.
