Railroads powered entirely by Alco diesel locomotives are few in number. The Green Bay & Western Railroad had a total of sixteen operating Alco’s when this show was filmed in 1992, GB&W’s last full year of operation as an independent company. Indeed, the railroad had an affinity for Alco’s since diesel’s first replaced steam locomotives, keeping them well maintained and looking great in their deep red paint scheme. Stretching from the east side to the west side of the Badger State, the Green Bay & Western line passed through scenic Wisconsin farmland.
Much of the railroad’s traffic was related to the state’s booming paper industry. Local freights are seen in action as they work these vital enterprises. We follow road trains across the state, watching as they stop to pick up and set out cars. Powered by smoking and burbling Alco diesels, the trains put on fascinating shows working over the hills and through small towns. The essence and vitality of one of America’s classic small railroads is preserved in this affectionate tribute. Listen to the rumble and see the smoke of those big red diesels along The Green Bay Route!

Despite Dave’s narrative errors, I’m still giving this program five stars. As a former GBW employee, this is a tribute to my co-workers. Also, the massive former Consolidated Papers mill is long gone and being torn down.

Another fallen flag railroad. Green Bay Route shows their beautiful red ALCOs as they work across Wisconsin.

This is a great video to add to your collection. Even if you are not a GBW fan, this video shows the railroad as a whole is one of those that cover the entire system. These types of videos happen to be my favorite. If you are an Alco fan this is also something you need to see. As a railroader myself, seeing just how these crews switched was crazy. It really was a different time on the rr.

This video shows the operations of the GBW, that will never be repeated. Those gorgeous ALCO’s with their amazing sounds pulling mainline and local freight was great, but the best scene was the “Boat Train” operations. A really great and informative video!
