The Erie Railroad’s main line crossed eastern Pennsylvania and southern New York to Binghamton on its way west to Chicago. In the early 1960s, the Erie merged with competitor, Delaware, Lackawanna and Western to form the Erie-Lackawanna. When Conrail took over most of the railroad lines in the northeast, the Erie Lackawanna was included. This former EL route was downgraded as Conrail’s main route west was the more northerly “Water Level Route” of the former New York Central.
br>This former EL line became known as “The Southern Tier”. This program covers the line from Port Jervis, NY, to Johnson City, NY, including Callicoon, Cochecton, Hancock, Gulf Summit, Deposit and famous Starrucca Viaduct.

At first I was a bit disappointed in the video quality but once you realize it’s railfan video and just enjoy the show for the trains and locations, I found it very enjoyable. Train Symbols and locations are often stated. There are a few times where a mainline train stops to add cars to the consist. A few multiple train meets are shown and a few trains are chased and shown at multiple locations. I’ve never been to this area and it was nice to see Conrail action that we’ll never get to see again. I recommend this DVD for the price.
