Close to Marion, North Carolina the former Clinchfield and former Southern had to avoid each other – and they so they did, with the Clinchfield building a 1,688 foot tunnel under the Southern, and the Southern building a bridge over the Clinchfield nearby. Where the Southern crossed over the Clinchfield is named Clinchcross on the railroad and is where the Clinchfield had its Marion, North Carolina depot.
It’s a great trainwatching spot today – as it was in the 1990s. Join T&W Productions for a two disc, two hour, look at a very busy Clinchcross. CSX is running older units plus SD70MACs and AC6000CWs while NS has C40-9W units running the rails. We’ll see mixed freight, coal and even passenger trains. A CSX track crew is active during one trip.
