The 1980s and ‘90s saw a golden age of steam revival. Nearly every major railroad, and many smaller ones, rostered a steam locomotive, or an entire steam program. A steam fan wanting to photograph, film or ride behind big steam had a menu of offerings each summer. For the railroads it was publicity even the best PR department couldn’t buy as huge crowds came out to see the big machines.
This show is a compilation of footage previously seen in other Main Line Motion Picture programs, plus new footage that cuts straight to the heart of the action, these mighty machines pulling hard; hitting the steepest grades of the East and West. You’ll see steam locomotives pouring on the power to conquer Mother Nature. Featuring the big steam muscle of N&W 611 & 1218, C&O 2716, NKP 765, PRR 1361, UP 3985 & 844, MILW 261, SOU 4501 and quite a few more!
You’ll see tall plumes of steam and smoke and hear stack talk like you’ve rarely heard before as you watch “Hardworking Steam on Steep Grades” (Volume One).
Please note: All footage comes from the 1980s and ’90s, so was shot with equipment that provided less clarity than today’s amazing cameras. But then again, those cameras couldn’t be there on the famous 4.7% Saluda Grade when N&W 611 proudly pulled a passenger train up the grade without the help of any of that new-fangled diesel power.
Previously released under the title “Steep Steel & Slipping, Stalling Steam! (Volume 1)”. This new release has additional footage and has been digitized, upconverted, frame-by-frame stabilized and color-corrected.

I bought this video as a freebie during the holidays and I love all of the action! Sadly, not too many steam locomotives are still in service today but they are enjoyable to watch such as Union Pacific’s 844 along with 3985. Southern Railway’s 4501 and Norfolk & Western’s class J #611 during the 1980s and 1990s. The only film I have from this video was when the Challenger traveled to CSX territory for the special Christmas train. I also wish there were some narration to learn more
