Running nearly 200 miles between Colton, California and Yuma, Arizona, the Yuma Subdivision is a part of the former Southern Pacific’s Sunset Route, which today serves the Union Pacific as an important rail corridor. It is part of the second Transcontinental Railroad built in the late nineteenth century connecting southern California with Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, and Mexico.

The Yuma Subdivision is a diverse piece of railroad with steep mountain grades and high-speed desert running. It climbs over  Beaumont Hill through San Timoteo Canyon, and drops down along the shore of the Salton Sea at an elevation of 204 feet below sea-level. It races over the arid desert to a meeting with the Colorado River at the Arizona State line.

This busy piece of railroad is mostly double-tracked, seeing a number of high priority intermodal trains along with manifests traveling to and from West Colton Yard. Long stack trains with both DPU and manned helpers out of Indio dig in for the climb over San Gorgonio Pass.

Join us for this fantastic adventure over Beaumont Hill and along the Salton Sea!

This region covered in the video is dark territory for Amtrak passengers, so we do not see Amtrak. Daylight scenes are totally freight trains, & many huge in size.
With a trip planned in 2024 on Amtrak on this line, my wife & I were hoping to see the region, but Amtrak travels it during the night. This video does a fantastic job showing what will not be seen from the comfort of a seat on the “Sunset Limited”. I was surprised at the sight of the station at Palm Springs. Never having been to California, I was hoping to see much more beauty of that area from the Amtrak. The Salton Sea region worth the price of the video & the narration is excellent, as is the rest of the line heading east. It is great to see the agricultural areas thanks to irrigation.
As with all 7 idea productions, the colour is outstanding as also the narration.
Very pleased with the video. Aaron has another “hit” production.

Aaron from 7Ideas is in my opinion the best producer. His camera work is outstanding and his narration makes for an entertaining DVD to watch numerous times. Yuma sub does not disappoint. Different views of trains and scenery along this desolate line are incredible. Well done 7Ideas.
