We get to see Iowa Interstate 2-10-2 QJ #7081 running from Des Moines to Council Bluffs, Iowa in conjunction with the Rock Island Technical Society. 7081 would be on display at Golden Spike Park in Council Bluffs along with Union Pacific 4-8-4 #844. The run back to Cheyenne covering the next two days would be Steve Lee’s last time at the throttle before retirement. Includes:

*Chasing, pacing of Iowa Interstate 7081 on Thursday and on a very cold and windy day on Saturday, Nov. 13th *Union Pacific 844 leaving Omaha on the 13th

*Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 #3985 on the River Sub into Jefferson City in October 2010 & *Great runbys and mainline steam – doubleheaded – on a revenue freight on the Iowa Interstate!

Here’s the segments shown in order in this Un-Narrated program:

    1. Iowa Interstate QJ 7081 from Des Moines to Council Bluffs Iowa on November 11th 2010 while wearing a replica of a Southern Railway 3 chime whistle.

    2. Union Pacific 844 on display with 7081 the next day the 12th, & the following day the 13th on the return trip to Cheyenne Wyoming in the snow which is the final time Steve Lee would be at the throttle with the never retired northern itself with 7081 heading back to Newton while being paced between Wiota & Anita.

    3. UP Challenger 3985 from Kansas City to Jefferson City Missouri about a month ago on October 4th 2010 before the 4-6-6-4 itself was retired.

And 4. 7081 & 6988 (before that engine was Americanized in 2011) double-heading on various freight trains during June 9th & 10th 2007 which is the longest segment in the program.

Fun Fact: Steve Mitchell of Yard Goat Images was also on the 2010 trips as his angles were shown on the titles: Steam Specials in the Heartland from 2010, A Boatload of Steam from 2011, & UP Steam: New Century Journeys from 2016.

Just more or less than 15 years after these scenes were recorded, both the QJs are stored out of service awaiting for its FRA inspection, while 844 hasn’t operated since double-heading with Big Boy 4014 in May of 2019, & 3985 has since been moved to Silvis Illinois in the fall of 2022 for restoration to operating condition with 2-10-2 number 5511, & centennial diesel 6936.
