“The Best of the Narrow Gauge” is the first show in Green Frog’s “Top Frog” series and the first in our Emery Gulash Narrow Gauge Collection. “Top Frog, Volume 1” covers many of Emery’s best narrow gauge vignettes. This show provides an entertaining and fast-paced program showing the “Best of” Rio Grande narrow gauge. Bright, crisp 16mm film. 61 minutes
“The East Broad Top” gives us 25 years of Emery Gulash filming activities on the EBT. His coverage starts in the early ’50s – well before the EBT was a tourist railroad. Only one visit to the EBT is enough to realize how special this National Historic Landmark really is. The EBT is one of the very few places in North America where one can still see steam powered action and railroad history virtually untouched by time. Emery caught all the action from the early 50s through two Winter Spectaculars in the 70s.
br>You will see freight and passenger action, double headers and even triple headers as they work their way up and down the line. Bright, crisp 16mm film, all in color. 120 minutes
1 Video Combo Disc, 3 Shows
In this combo you will see: Show #1, “Switching’ Along The Rio Grande”, covering activity on the operating Rio Grande narrow gauge track: Alamosa, Chama, Antonito, Durango, Pagosa Springs and the Farmington Branch, and many other locations. Bright, crisp 16mm film, all in color. 40 minutes
Show #2, “Twilight Of The Rio Grande” where we see the late 1960s action. Emery was able to produce spectacular full-color record of one of the most famous narrow gauge operations in the country. Coverage includes single and double headed operations between Alamosa and Silverton, including Antonito, Cumbres, Chama, Durango and many rare shots of Pagosa Springs and the Farmington branch. Bright, crisp 16mm film, all in color. 40 minutes
Show #3, “Work train To Silverton”, will grab your attention from beginning to end. The action covers a train of drop bottom gons headed by a class K-28 Mike as it works its way between Durango and Silverton and return. The train starts out early in the morning, ahead of the Silverton passenger runs. The crisp golden colors of early morning portray a warmness seldom seen in railroading. The train is followed through the day as it switches at Hermosa, Silverton and interfaces with the Silverton passenger runs. Bright, crisp 16mm film, all in color. 40 minutes
“Rotary on the Rio Grande” is a look at the mid-1970s when the Cumbres and Toltec fired up Rio Grande Rotary OM. These two snow plow adventures run out of Chama during the late winter and inspired many to chase and photograph the events. But no one covered it as well as famed filmographer Emery Gulash. You’ll the re-creation of the historic Rio Grande snow removal trains, bucking snow drifts, backing up and hitting the drift hard again, finally breaking through the packed snow and the powerful shower of snow flinging out the snow chute. Emery captured some of the most beautiful snow scenes ever filmed on any Colorado narrow gauge line. Locomotives 492 (class K-37), 487 and 483 (class K-36’s) do the honors in this film. It’s amazing the effort that went in to keeping these lines open during the winter season. Bright, crisp 16mm film, all in color. 70 minutes
“The Chama Turn” is what railroaders called it, and sometimes the Cumbres Turn. Railfans knew the operations over Cumbres simply as the Cumbres Pass route. In the mid-1960s, Emery Gulash brought his 16mm Bolex to Colorado to capture all the nuances of Colorado narrow gauge railroading. His keen eye for composition, his patience for just the right shot – plus his dedicated railfan attitude – now provide us with an exquisite record of those narrow gauge operations. Many “turns” out of Chama are shown, as well as runs to Antonito. Bright, crisp 16mm film, all in color. 60 minutes
Total run time is 7 hours 11 minutes on 5 discs.

While majority of this box set captures the Rio Grande Narrow Gauge during the 1950’s 1960’s & 1970s from regular operations on the entire 4th division with the since been abandoned Chama to Durango Line to today’s tourist trips, multiple trips were also made at the East Broad Top in Pennsylvania. If many steam fans love a huge variety of 2-8-2 Mikados from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado & New Mexico, to the Mountains of Western Pennsylvania, this is a great compilation of amazing steam action to add to your railroad video library.
