I’ve had a VHS copy of this film for years, and decided to do a mix of old and new by buying it on DVD. As others have mentioned, I also have a copy of the 30-minute video, “Riding the Rails,” also from Skyfire, but this provides a great extension on SP 4449’s 1991 excursion to Sacramento’s California State Railroad Museum. I always enjoyed the camera angles they put all over 4449, but my favorite was the one by its airhorn.

This program is most likely one of the “classics of ALL classics” when it comes to railfan videography. Jim Mitchell and his Skyfire crew did a superb job with not just “Steaming Up The New River Gorge”, but also THIS documentary… one of my very first VHS tapes back when I was very young… and seeing the full length of it on DVD today is still something I can’t stop being excited about. SP #4449 and her matching consist traversing the high, rugged Cascade Mountains never gets old! The “Northwest” scenery there in Oregon is some of the best on God’s green earth!

Southern Pacific Daylight 4449 traveled from Portland, Oregon to the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento for Railfair ‘91. It was also for the Red & orange 4-8-4’s 50th anniversary. Interviews with Doyle McCormick & the team are shown as well as tons of onboard footage from the cab, in the coaches, & even helicopter angles. There was also a 30 minute version of this program in 1993 called riding the rails. All in all, Jim Mitchell wrote and narrated this program this excellent.
