This was the Southern Pacific at work on the Yuma District of the Sunset Route. See mixed freights and ‘intermodal’ trains as well as locals and transfer freights. We also bring lots of ‘foreign’ and pool-power. Visit the Imperial Valley lines to remember the sugar beet trains of the SP. Learn how the beet cars were loaded and follow the beets to Betteravia where they were processed at the Holly Sugar plant. Beet trains handed off to the SMV Railroad at Guadalupe, CA are covered from the 1970s and 1992. And don’t miss a cab ride on the SP-owned Carriso Gorge line just before hurricane Kathleen closed it to through traffic in 1976.

The best material from our discontinued video, “Sunset Salute”, is combined with a wealth of newly discovered material to make this new DVD video. Featuring… Yuma AZ to Colton CA, Beaumont Hill 1991 – 1995, Helpers and Foreign Power, Imperial Valley SA&E Ry. cab ride c. 1975, Sugar Beet Trains c. 1992, Beet loading and processing, Betteravia Sugar Factory, Santa Maria Valley Railroad, SP Coastline action.

Fantastic film about the SP’s line through Imperial Valley. It’s certainly unique to say the formation of a “new” sea, of all things, disrupted SP’s operations for a time. The sugar beet operations are also very interesting. I would very much recommend this video!

  2. Alan Ross

Here is a film that all rail fans should own. See lots of action right down to how load the beet cars. See how they are loaded and work. Old video along with new video makes for a great film. A very inforative film.
    95 minutes long. 4 stars.

  3. Olden DeCrepid

An enjoyable DVD. Contains good footage of SP operations up to the end. It also contains good footage of older operations during beet harvest. There are good shots of older equipment which is helps with spotter skills.

Charles Smiley Productions are noted for the video presentations based a lot on the history of the power and the locations, with no real set order on location. Although that is great for historical purposes, this video takes a twist more for the railfan who is location minded more than history minded. A look at Southern Pacific operations in Southern California with more emphasis on the operations rather than the power and history of the rolling stock. This is what you will witness in this very fine video, which I believe is one of Charles Smileys best. Watch as trains blast by Salton Lake in the desert region, and work the Imperial Valley with long loads of sugar beets. Later a visit to the sugar beet plant and see some of the operations of sugar making. Excellent coverage of it. The scenery is awesome, the coverage of the noted lines is excellent, and the narration is well done for the theme of the video, without being overdone. An excellent video for all railfans. Highly recommended.
