We begin our visit to Union Pacific’s famous Sherman Hill in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Cheyenne Yard. Between Cheyenne and Laramie is the crossing of the Continental Divide with three tracks over Sherman Hill. Tracks 1 and 2 have a 1.55% ruling grade while track 3 is at less than 1%. This stretch of railroad has always been a challenge for the Union Pacific and the giant 4-8-8-4 Big Boys were designed to handle this… now it’s big diesels, the newest and biggest diesels Union Pacific rosters.

This program was shot using good “prosumer” equipment of the time, but is not up to the clarity of today’s high-definition video. It is however an excellent snapshot of an important time and place in the nation’s railroad history.

  1. Dan

One of North America’s iconic railroad locations, with all the action and excitement you’d expect. Sherman Hill plays host to a non-stop parade of long, heavy trains powered by an interesting mix of some of the day’s most powerful new locomotives and some fallen flag classics. The video is generally well done; perhaps not up to today’s standards but, as with other MoKan productions, the historical significance of this program more than makes up for any quality shortcomings you might find.

  2. rickyfreni

Shot in 1997, this 2 hour videotape features a great variety of diesel powered freight trains from Cheyenne to Laramie on 2 different routes. Especially some south to denver. There are multiple examples of motive power on the UP. which includes the Standard Cab C40-8’s, Dash 8-40 CW’s, GP 38-2’s SD40-2’s, SD60M’s, and more. Besidies Union pacific, there are other roadnames that climb the hill, Which includes, Chicago & Northwestern, Southern Pacific, MPI, Norfolk Southern & others. For steam, We all know that Big Boy 4004 is still on display at Cheyenne. Thankfully, These footages were recorded way before the much more comfortable wide cab units, as most of the Standard Cab C40-8’s have since been sold to Canadian National.

Sherman Hill….. possibly one of the greatest feats of a railroad crossing the Continental Divide anywhere in the USA. UP puts on an excellent show as to how to do it at the finest way possible. Lots of heavy power pulling monster trains, working to their maximum. The roducer here does a wonderful job allowing us to view it at it’s best with the power available at the time. Like all MoKan Videos…. history is preserved in an excellent manner that can be treasured for many years to come. With the crossing of Sherman Hill…. All we can do is smile and enjoy every moment. Thankyou Mr. Ernst for a job well done.

Not the best technical quality, colour, lighting, etc, but a good way to use an afternoon (if you like yellow)
If you miss SD40-2s on the mainline, there are some good segments in here. Sherman hill was once the domain of big boys, and the locomotives shown are their spiritual successors.
