This is a desolate and lonely stretch of railroad… and a beautiful and busy stretch of railroad! This is the UP’s former Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad line across the Mojave Desert from east of Barstow, through the scenic splendors of Afton Canyon, along the access road through the Devil’s Playground to Kelso, up tough Cima Hill, down through the Ivanpah Valley, over Erie Summit and beyond Las Vegas to Meadow Valley Wash. The inspiration came from Mark Hemphill’s superb book: “Union Pacific: Salt Lake Route”

The colors, the lighting, the sounds and the sense of isolation … this program does a nice job capturing the “feel” of railroading in a landscape of deserts and canyons. The videography is solid and creative, and now that the video is 25 years old it’s also a nice look at locomotive types, paint schemes and consists from a generation ago. Two hours of enjoyable armchair railfanning.

Interesting, but not much in the way of excitement for the rail fans. So much has been produced on the Mojave Desert region and this video really does not add to it. The scenery is likely the best part. I could do without this video.
