The Dakota & Iowa Railroad is a scenic 138 mile shortline operating over former Milwaukee Road trackage. This fascinating rail line is owned by LG Everist, Inc. and begins at their large sand and rock quarry in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Traveling south the rail line passes through Sioux Falls, SD as the tracks then wind their way along and over the Big Sioux River all the way to Sioux City, Iowa. The DAIR action includes unit aggregate trains, grain, ethanol and general freight. Their very long trains are powered with up to 10 diesel lashups as they work the rolling grades and across the scenic countryside.

Diesel power on the Dakota & Iowa include 15 GP9s, a GP20, and a few GP39-2s, GP50s and SD39s. We also get a brief look at some of the DAIR’s connecting railroads: Burlington Northern, Ellis & Eastern and the BNSF. Footage shot in 1992-1995 and in 2007-2008. Each Plets Express DVD comes with a map and additional information to make it easy and enjoyable to follow along with the program.

An enjoyable look at a fascinating Midwest regional, with Plets Express’ flair for great storytelling. The camerawork is well done, capturing trains of the Dakota & Iowa in a variety of scenic settings that were once the domain of the Milwaukee Road. The DAIR operates with a roster of handsome older locomotives, leading to some impressive lashups to help negotiate a landscape that might not be as flat as you think! The narration provides helpful information about the railroad and the region, and still leaves room for the sound of the trains. The program has a nice, relaxed feel to it, and will make a fine addition to any collection.
