Come along on a journey of discovery when Pentrex set out in the early 1990s to explore the railroads of the Pine Tree State. You’ll see all the freight operations of the time plus a fascinating tourist line. Maine’s beauty is revealed as you follow the trains through villages and across the open countryside. The Bangor & Aroostook, Canadian Pacific, Saint Lawrence & Atlantic, Belfast & Moosehead Lake, and Guilford Transportation’s Springfield Terminal are all covered. The Alco RS-11 of the Maine Coast puts on a show for us as we witness the new railroad’s movements.

At Brownville Junction, we stay up all night to catch the nocturnal operations of Canadian Pacific and a VIA passenger train. Following a Bangor & Aroostook local freight, we watch it work its way along the line. The locomotives at the Springfield Terminal will surprise you, as many older-model diesels work in daily freight service. The wide range of locomotive types and paint schemes will captivate your interest and the scenic beauty of the state provides a perfect backdrop for the great railroading action you’ll enjoy in Today’s Maine Railroads!

This program features a variety of different railroads as they hustle freights throughout the state of Maine.

Maine… not exactly a location you may expect to see great train action? With Canada to the north & the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Maine is kindof by itself in the USA. So…Think again, as Maine has a lot to offer rail fans. In this video…The Class 1 Canadian Pacific crosses the state on a short cut between the urban center of Montreal Quebec and the Canadian Maritime provinces. Joining the CPR is VIA Rail Canada doing the same (both long since gone after this video was made). Then, there are the regionals and shortlines… Bangor & Aroostock; St. Lawrence & Atlantic; Belfast & Moosehead… etc… The sceney is stunning, and the railroad action is great. Lots of paint schemes not normally seen in the USA & older power still at work. This is a classic.

Lots of Maine railroads don’t exist anymore today but this video is well worth the effort. Beautiful scenery and various types of trains and it even has a steam engine on display at the very end of the video. 5 stars for today’ Maine railroads.

As A New Englander, I’ve Been Busy Shooting Commuter Trains & Amtrak. I Don’t understand why Catching a Freight is much more difficult to shoot than the commuter trains.
