The Wisconsin Central was a regional railroad success story in the 1990s. Canadian National bought it in 2001 and the WC is gone now. But this video was shot in 1996 – when the WC was a hot independent property. The WC is very nice to us: We get a tour of the dispatchers office and shops at Stevens Point, and a tour of the shops at Fond du Lac. See a GP3O and SDL39 on Byron Hill, a taconite train on the hill with 2 SP ACs and 2 WC units. We’ll also see DM&IR SD9s, UP run through trains and lots of older power.

HBP did some good work here. When everyone talks about Wisconsin Central it’s SD45 this and F45 that. This program shows a lot of locals and branchlike traffic. Ex SOO GP35’s, ex MP GP35M’s, ex FRV SD24’s, DMIR high hood’s, ex SOO GP30’s and SDL39’s all leading trains. Very excellent DVD!

  2. JT

Spectacular video! Well worth the $20! This is also the only video I have ever seen that catches a unstaged Train vs Car accident in Junction City, when an SDL39 strikes a black car at a crossing. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt as the train was doing about 5mph.

What else can I say, it is a personal favorite!

  3. Dan

The Wisconsin Central was in its prime when this video was shot 25 years ago, and Highball Productions gets an A+ for capturing the “feel” of everyone’s favorite regional railroad, from the WC’s handsome paint scheme to scenic locations (Byron Hill is especially nice), classic locomotives, foreign power, insiders’ tours and more. As always, Highball’s camerawork and editing are very well done. Contemporary railroading at its best when it was released, this program is now a railfan’s time machine … and a great way to celebrate the Wisconsin Central.

This is a really fine look at the Wisconsin Central before the greedy Canadian National swallowed it up and send it into history. The operations from the shop to mainline action is well covered. Some foreign power is seen on run throughs, and older signals are still in use. Great video.

  5. Brad

This is a great way to relieve the power of the WC in Wisconsin. From the beauty of their paint to the sound of their EMD engines, you’ll enjoy watching this video to remember what might be the most popular shortline ever. Here’s to the WC

What can I say about the video? What can I say about the WC! I wish I could go back to the 90s and hear those huge SD45s for myself, but as I cannot, I watch this once in a while. Not the real thing, but I’m very glad to have it.
