With an option to watch the program with just the sounds of steam, or an option to watch with relaxing music by Brandon Howell, that has a song Spirit of Durango that was performed by Miss Erin Jean near the end of the program, sounds of the railroad & even minimal narration by Juan Jose Aguiree, this 2008 title covers the route of the former Rio Grande Silverton Branch West & North of the narrow gauge’s 4th division with steam engines 478, 481, & 486 on different trips, plus a center cab diesel in the Durango Yard. Note the mention of the Cumbres & Toltec as 478 couples onto the first passenger train of the day. Every inch of the D&S is covered like the Durango Yard & Depot, the Hermosa Water Tower, Home Ranch, Rockwood Wye, Shalona Lake at Elbert Creek Canyon, Pinkerton Siding, the High Line over the Animas River, the high bridge over the river, Tacoma, Tank Creek, Elk Park Wye, Cascade Canyon Wye, Teft Bridge, Needleton siding, & Silverton. Aside from the ground, there are also scenes from the cab of 486, & inside the coaches as well as from the rear of caboose 0500. Not to mention a little speeder following behind the train. Although this program has the exact same riding format as some other titles like Steam to Silverton by Greg Scholl, & Riding a Freight Train on the D&S by Railway Productions for example, it’ll still give the viewer on what it was like to ride the rails in the Southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado. While the case says that it ran for 90 minutes, the main program itself ran for 80 minutes, plus there are 10 minutes of previews. Oh & one other thing: this program was made during production of another Highball title: K-36 Cab Ride.

I bought this video as a keepsake after riding the Durango and Silverton, and while nothing can match the thrill of actually being on the train, this program comes close. Stunning scenery at the perfect time of year, flawless video and creative editing — it’s a feast for the senses that everyone will enjoy!

A fantastic look at operating narrow gauge in the heart of the mountains. Great scenic views of the region in a beautiful time of the year. Well done Highball.

Pretty neat look into the inner workings and daily operations of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. See cab footage along with footage shot from a photo train pulled by K-28 class locomotive 478. See great scenes from runby’s at locations not often seen from outside the train.

What a wonderful old train the Silverton Train is. When riding it you feel like you have gone back in time for rail travel. Going through the Colorado mountains, seeing the fall colors, the water falls, and sometimes some deer. The train ride to Durango takes @ 4 hours & is worth it. I recommended this dvd highly. 5 stars.
