Pentrex visited the “Big Sky” country of Montana in 1990 to witness the operations of what was then one of the county’s newest regional railroads, the Montana Rail Link. The rugged landscapes of western Montana’s Rocky Mountains presented a challenge to early railroad builders and you’ll witness that continuing struggle as MRL operates high tonnage trains across the daunting grades of both Mullan and Bozeman Passes. We’ll tour the entire length of the railroad from east to west, starting on the east end at Jones Junction and traveling to the end of MRL trackage at Sandpoint, Idaho.
Both local freights and Burlington Northern hotshots are seen in action. There’s plenty of cab ride footage, too, as we ride several freights over the road’s mountainous terrain. From interesting locomotives to fantastic scenery, this program, released originally in 1990, is filled with the kind of nonstop action that railfans love to see.

Hard-working diesels and a variety of train consists, set against the stunning backdrop of Montana. MRL was a relatively new regional railroad when this video was shot in 1990, and the program does a fantastic job of covering operations across the entire system. Camera work and narration are rock solid. After thirty years, “Montana Rail Link” has only gotten better with time.

From cows mooing off screen to semaphore signals from the decades of steam, as well as grain trains, mixed trains and unusual consists, there is a great variety of diesels on both Montana rail link & Burlington Northern with some appearances by other road names. There is also a look at billings yard.

Regional Railroads don’t appear to be of great interest to a lot of Railfans. Mainly becuase the fact they are smaller in size than the Class 1’s, on former Class 1 lines.
With Montana Rail Link, think again. I purcashed my 1st copy in early 2001 and have lost count at the number of times it’s been viewed (I literally wore out the VHS and had to replace it with a dvd. Covered from east to west, if you love rolling scenery, it builds as the movie goes along.

I enjoy this film because is shows lots of the big EMD SD45’s toiling away pulling heavy manifest and coal trains. Burlington Northern Power and Lease power also makes an appearance. The film also shows a lot of the Montana Rail Links operations including views from both the cab and on the ground. Great video to say the least!
