The Legendary Canadian had its inaugural run on April 24, 1955 and since the introduction of this classic stainless steel train, it has been in a class of its own. Even today these coaches are still in operation for VIA Rail, using the same cars that were originally ordered for Canadian Pacific. The DVD has two main segments (and a bonus!): The first segment is a 20 minute show made by CP as a publicity film when the train first ran in 1955. Go on a trip across the country in the new train. You’ll be onboard and trackside as the train travels west toward Vancouver.

The second main segment on the DVD is a film titled “Working Number 1” which gives you a behind the scenes look at the people and efforts necessary to keep the “Canadian” going under VIA Rail ownership. You will see the shops, in the station, trackside, and aboard the train, prior to and during much of No. 1’s first leg from Toronto to Capreol. This includes all aspects of the onboard train jobs. You’ll also see views from the engine cab. This was shot and mastered on broadcast video equipment and with great production equipment. As a bonus, there is the short film “The New Budd Train” which is a newsreel program with trackside, aerial, and onboard film footage showing the “Canadian” being tested behind Reading F-units in the Philadelphia area. If you like train travel, and the “CANADIAN” is probably north America’s BEST train, then you will want to get “The Legendary Canadian”

In the Canadian portion of this combo, the 20 minute company film from 1955 was also used on A Winter’s journey by Wild rose productions in 1987 that was later owned by Pentrex.

In the Working Number 1 portion of this combo which was made in 1998, there are clips from the 1955 color film itself, as well as a westbound journey from Toronto to Vancouver BC which is operated by a pair of F40s from both trackside, & onboard the train itself. S.C. Bradley did a fine job narrating this one.

Finally there is a 6 to 7 minute Black & White Newsreel showing the Budd cars while a ceremony is held at the same time.

This is one of the 10 Rail Innovations titles that were acquired by Greg Scholl in 2011.

GREAT DVD ABOUT THE LEGENDARY CANADIAN. FIRST RAN ON APRIL 24, 1955, IN ALL ITS GLORY AND COLOR. SEE A 20 MINUTE SHOW MADE BY CP AS A PUBLICITY FILM ABOUT THE LEGENDARY CANADIAN. THE SECOND PART “WORKING NUMBER 1” SHOW YOU THE PEOPLE AND THE EFFORT TO KEEP THE “CANADIAN” RUNNING UNDER VIA RAIL. INCLUDED IS A BONUS FILM ABOUT THE NEW “BUDD TRAIN” WHICH IS A NEW’S REAL. GREAT MOVIE AND VERY INFORMATIVE AND GREAT SCENERY. 5 STARS AND 55 MINUTES LONG.

Honestly couldn’t ask for more, from the variety of footage to the information that they include. Pity that it’s now been cut back even further, but after watching this, I think you’ll need to ride the real thing!

Another fine Rail innovatios Production the original producers). A combo, entirely about the World Famous “Canadian”. Start with scenes from the 1950’s when under the CPR banner, the Canadian travels from Montreal and Toronto to Vancouver. There is no train ride in the world like it. See the service, the glorious beauty of the north Lake Superior region, on across the Canadian Prairies, and into the Rocky Mountains, ending in Vancouver. See Toronto’s Royal York Hotel when it was the tallest structure in downtown. Jump ahead to the late 1990’s, and the Canadian under the VIA banner. See the working operations of the train crew as VIA #1 makes it’s way north to Parry Sound Ontario. At 19 cars long it is short by the length it is today at over 26 cars long. Every part is covered from Union Station to meets along the way. End with a segment as we go back in time to when the cars fist depart their manufacture in Pennsylvania. See the celebrations along the way from ground and air as the Canadian makes it’s maiden voyage. You’ll love every minute of this exciting video presentation. The greatest passenger train in the World — “The Canadian”. (And yes, I have travelled it from Toronto to the Prairie Provinces. It’s every bit as exciting when on board). A must for every rail fan collection.
