The Joint Line is an action-filled stretch of contemporary main line with a colorful past. Two fiercely competitive railroads, the Denver & Rio Grande and the Santa Fe, built parallel tracks between Denver and Pueblo, Colorado in the mid 1880s. However, the competition came to a halt during World War I when the US Government forced “joint” operations between the two railroads.

In the mid 1990s, which this production was filmed, the Joint Line supported the Southern Pacific (including the Denver & Rio Grande Western), the Santa Fe, and the Burlington Northern. Coal, freight, and passenger trains utilized this heavily traveled right of way. You’ll see dozens of leased and run-through locomotives, pusher engines shoving hard against long coal drags, and some of the newer diesels, such as BN’s SD70MACs. Old black and white photos showing steam and early diesel engines in this area add an interesting comparison of the present and the past.

Produced over four years, this presentation treats you to the splendor of the different seasons in Colorado’s gorgeous terrain, highlighted by spectacular snow scenes. You’ll visit many of the popular locations along the line: Castle Rock, Palmer Lake, South Denver, and other scenic spots. Heavy freights, nonstop action, varied motive power, and breathtaking scenery make The Joint Line a DVD you won’t want to miss!

Basically 4 fallen flag railroads captured on one line through a beautiful territory. Any railfan should have at least one program about the joint line in their collection, and I recommend this one!

Originally released in 1995, the entire pentrex team traveled to the Colorado Rockies for a look at the line between Denver & Pueblo which includes historic still images from the 19th century during the early decades of steam in America, to the years of Standard Gauge steam on the Rio Grande before all were retired & mostly gone for scrap after 1956. Plus, there are still images of streamliners, a look inside the Denver Union Station, the Denver Steam Shops, & doubleheaded steam powered freight trains. The majority of this program focuses on everyday diesel operations that includes Burlington Northern (During its final months as an independent railroad before it was merged with the Santa Fe), HLCX, Soo Line, Electro Motive Division, AT&SF, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Amtrak’s California Zephyr, LMX, Norfolk Southern, Rio Grande, CSX, Kansas City Southern, Cotton Belt, & Southern.

Locations include Denver Yard, Prospect Junction, South Denver (Note the Denny’s Diner Sign in the Background), Englewood, Littleton, Wolhurst, Acequia, Big Lift Intermodal Yard, Louviers, Sedalia Flyovers, East Plum Creek, Orsa, Castle Rock (Not the movie company that owns Seinfeld), Tomah, Larkspur, Greenland Ranch, Spruce, Palmer Lake with narrow gauge 2-8-0 number 433 on display in the background as well as a few scenes in the winter, Monumen, Husted near the Air Force Camp, Academy, Colorado Springs with Pike’s Peak in the background on one scene, & later an appearance by Union Pacific E Units 949, 951, & B unit 963, Cimeron, Kelker, Crews, Fountain with a strange diesel on display, Nixon Power Plant, Henkel, Bragdon, Tapp Siding, & Pueblo Yard with the town’s junction, & highlights of the northbound return trip to Denver.

Motive power from SW1500 switchers & SD40-2s to the mighty SD70Macs are featured throughout the trip. There are also freights that occasionally still used cabooses (Mostly from BN).

Interesting operations, beautiful scenery and a steady parade of trains … that’s the Joint Line! This was the pre-megamerger railroading of the mid ’90s, and fallen flag railroads and long-gone paint schemes still ruled the line. Camerawork is creative, the trains sound great, and the program does a nice job explaining the history of the Joint Line. An entertaining and educational addition to any collection!

  4. Lloyd

4 railroads sharing a stretch of rails between 2 Colorado cities. Lots of heavy freight action as the BN, Santa Fe, SP & D&RGW are seen at various locations between Denver & Pueblo. And being in Colorado…. the scenery is excellent. Well done Pentrex.

Excellent video, saw a preview on another pentrex film and had to buy it. A great variety of motive power. Had no clue about the joint line until I saw this preview. Love the long coal trains and BN u boats.

I think every young boy of the 90s had this one. action of the BN and ATSF before they became BNSF, and SP and DRGW action before they became UP. pretty cool. it is well done. they cover the south track to Pueblo, and then the north track to Denver.

  9. Kraig

Good video showing both railroads before they merged and the Rio Grande
