Supercabs, or as some are called, Safety Cabs, have made a difference in crew safety and comfort – and in how a locomotive looks! In “Supercab!” we take an in depth look at the development of the Supercab locomotive. We’ll see the early industry standard SD40-2 and C30-7 locomotives from the 1970s as well as the earliest Supercab: the GP40-2 “Canadian” cab that started it. We’ll also see the SD60M & C40-8W, the first US Supercabs, through the high tech SD90MAC and AC6000CW of the high horsepower race era.

Supercab is a well explained video about wide-nose diesel locomotives beginning with the 1970’s-era Canadian comfort cab models, including the GP40-2W from General Motors Diesel Division and the M420 by the Montreal Locomotive Works. There are also a few narrow-nose types mentioned such as the Electro-Motive SD40-2 and the General Electric C30-7.

Almost every wide-cab freight locomotive has been featured in this video: the microprocessor-controlled EMD SD60M and GE DASH 8-40CW; the four-axle GP60M and DASH 8-40BW; the Canadian cowl-bodied SD60F and DASH 8-40CM; the more powerful SD70M and DASH 9-44CW; the alternating-current-motored SD70MAC and AC4400CW; and lastly, the gigantic high-horsepower SD90MAC and AC6000CW, along with the Conrail SD80MAC.

Even some of the less talked about models are included: the SD60MAC prototype, the CSX 9000-series DASH 8-44CW, and the Canadian DASH 9-44CWL (to name a few). In this particular video, the EMD SD90 and the GE AC6000 appear to be the “convertible” locomotives that are rated between 4,300 and 4,400 horsepower, but they are nearly identical to the true 6,000-hp versions. Overall, Supercab has lots of train action combined with interesting facts about these modern diesels built prior to the 21st century.

Here is your opportunity to see how one of the best innovations in the railroad power developed. These are the safest locomotives of our time with the advancement of the technology. A great video that shows all we can learn about these super cabs of our day. Excellent production.
