The third volume on our popular “Sunrise/Sunset” series takes you to the busy triple-track mainline at Cincinnati, Ohio, where 12 routes radiating in and out of town are squeezed through a funnel called Winton Place. Here CSX, Norfolk Southern, Indiana & Ohio, and Amtrak trains compete for signals and switches, three-way meets are a regular occurrence, and directional running puts trains on competitors’ rails to ease the congestion!

Pentrex set up in the pre-dawn hours of June 28, 2000 to capture 15 hours worth of action from sunrise to sunset. Among the many interesting moves that came our way were a CSX special passenger train, steel and coal trains, the Juice Train, Triple Crown trains, and a working Loram Rail Grinder. We recorded 58 trains, many with a fascinating array of motive power. CSX presented an incredible variety of diesels, with numerous units on lease, and post-merger Conrail power was in use on both CSX and NS.

Train symbols and numbers are given for all movements showing where freights originated and where they’re headed. Plus, a schematic drawing and explanation of the signal system shows just how this busy junction is operated. If variety is what you want in your railroad entertainment, this show will exceed your expectations!

In this installment of the Sunrise Sunset series from 2001, the crew spends more than 15 hours watching a parade of CSX & Norfolk Southern Freight Trains with a very late Amtrak Cardinal & other unexpected surprises such as the Loram Rail Grinder during late June of 2000.

Other road names in addition to CSX & Norfolk Southern include Amtrak, Conrail, Union Pacific, Indiana & Ohio, Santa Fe, Grand Trunk, HLCX, GATX, HLGX, Kennicott Copper, MPI, & Seaboard.

There are trains heading to & from Marysville Ohio, Atlanta Georgia, Fort Wayne Indiana (home of NKP 765), Chattanooga Tennessee (home of Southern 4501), Chicago Illinois, Jacksonville Florida, Deshler Ohio, Portsmouth Ohio (since abandoned & most rails are owned by the Cincinnati Eastern Terminal Short Line), Washington DC, Louisville Kentucky, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Ashland Kentucky, Middletown Ohio, Walbridge Ohio, Norfolk Virginia, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Locals to Dayton Ohio with one of them having a CSX unit referenced to a Southern Pacific 10 wheeler in Texas, Rockport Indiana, Newark Ohio, Birmingham Alabama, Columbus Ohio, Baldwin Florida, Locals to Sharonsville, Emory Gap Tennessee, Martiki Mine, Toledo Ohio, Elkhart Indiana, Macon Georgia, St. Louis Missouri, Hamlet North Carolina, Parma Ohio, Detroit Michigan, Valley Junction, Norwood, Willard Ohio, Flat Rock Michigan, Buffalo New York, Danville Kentucky, Lynch Kentucky, Ashtabula Ohio, & Grand Rapids Michigan.

Note the Rally’s Burger Sign throughout the entire show, as well as an explanation of how this junction works. Not to mention one of the billboards with actress Cindy Crawford on it. In the parking lot, the men are playing basketball.

On one scene from the parking garage, the camera battery died on train Q-219 arriving.

This program has the viewer spend an entire day watching CSX, NS and I&O freights, Amtrak passenger trains, and even some special movements as they roll through Winton Place.

Cincinnati Ohio…. not a location many rail fans consider a great location for rail fanning, so Pentrex shows us that it indeed is great. Triple track action with meets and races are seen. Shot from different angles adds to the variety of action. A late Amtrak breaks up the freight trains seen. Screen graphics tell the time of day, destination & origin. etc… and some decent narration. Great production.

Although not a big fan of run-by videos. This is an exception. This was film during a time that NS and CSX had an interesting assortment of motive power. Did not know much about Cincinnati until watching this. A great description of signals was also presented. Great narration and a diagram are included. I would suggest this video to anyone.

So much to love about this! Pentrex does a GREAT job of explaining the junction and what the signal indications mean. So many different types of trains captured here of Amtrak, NS, CSX and I&O. I appreciated how Pentrex rented an elevated platform to capture the action at Winton Place given that under normal circumstances you can’t see everything going on.
