The long-awaited debut of the new Steamtown National Historic Site took place over July 4th weekend, 1995, and Pentrex was on the spot to capture this historic Grande Opening and the excursions leading up to it. Follow Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 steam locomotive #261 and New York, Susquehanna & Western 2-8-2 steamer #142 as they traveled through New York and Pennsylvania to arrive at the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western yards in Scranton.

Enjoy a tour of Steamtown’s “Core Complex,” a working 13-stall roundhouse and turntable area with History and Technology Museums, a visitors center, and a theater completing the full circle of buildings. In the rail yard you’ll witness the Grande Opening Celebration including the Great Steam Parade, featuring six smoke-belching steam locomotives.

Then witness the sights and sounds of working steam powerhouses as the Milwaukee #261, Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 #2317, and Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern 4-6-2 #425 pull special trains up the grade and along the 50 mph main line from Scranton to Moscow on Steamtown’s 13-mile excursion route.

The scenes of Milwaukee Road #261 were especially delightful… and the coverage of all the other excursion trips was pretty decent.

The grand opening of Steam town National Historic Site in Scranton Pennsylvania is amazing. The parade of steam and brief tour of the site as well as the excursions were awesome. Pentrex even covers Milwaukee 261 and Susquehanna & western 142 to Steam town.

Pentrex covers the action of the July 4th weekend opening of the then new Steamtown National Historic Site. For big steam we see Milwaukee 261, Susquehanna & Western 142, Canadian Pacific 2317, and Reading Blue Mountain & Northern 425. There is coverage of the excursions, Parade of Steam, and brief tour of the site.

  4. NorthAmericanSteelVeins

Pentrex did an excellent job documenting the official opening of Steamtown. Great coverage as well of the deadhead moves of the 261 and the Susquehanna one. Highly recommended, especially for the scenes of the locomotives tackling the grades of the former Lackawanna mainline out of Scranton.

Museums are great, and railroad museums are the best. Pentrex has done a fine job showing the Steamtown Museum, and the facts that led to it. And there is video of the locos in motion which is great. And we get to see the special excursion trains on a 13 mile journey which is good. However…. Pentrex does not spend much time with the actual opening ceremonies themselves. I thought that the title of the video is slightly misleading

  6. Adam Bass
