A once-in-a-lifetime steam excursion took place in June 1997 and Pentrex was on the spot with five camera teams to record the entire event. Union Pacific’s mighty 844, leading an A-B-A set of E-units and 18 matched passenger cars, made one last extraordinary trip through the Royal Gorge and over Tennessee Pass prior to UP’s closing of this historic line. Now you can relive the excitement of this thrilling steam adventure! On Day One, you’ll follow the beautiful train as it heads south out of Denver on the Joint Line and into Canon City.

Day Two brings you the sights and sounds of steam marching through the depths of the Royal Gorge, across the hanging bridge, up along the banks of the winding Arkansas River, blasting up grade to conquer 10,000-foot high Tennessee Pass, and heading down through Glenwood Canyon, a spectacular achievement! Day three features a high-speed chase across Utah’s magnificent desert landscapes, running past Green River and into Helper. In an awesome display of power, the 844 battles steep grades of Castle Gate and Soldier Summit. The final hours of the day see the train heading down through the Thistle tunnels and Provo, and arriving at Salt Lake City. Mainline steam just doesn’t get any better than this!

I hate to see a perfectly good rail route shut down, but the spectacle of 844 making a big run over Tennessee Pass before it was closed is definitely an incredible event. Also great to see the heritage E9s getting in on the action. I’d highly recommend this for anyone’s collection!

Steam over Tennessee Pass was billed as the steam event of the decade as Union Pacific 844 and E-units traveled from Denver, Colorado to Salt Lake City, Utah for the 1997 NRHS convention. Unfortunately, that same year Union Pacific discontinued the Tennessee Pass route. Soldier Summit and Salt Lake City are the most notable locations in Utah. Royal Gorge route is still in service today and Pentrex explained the history of the route. It’s a remarkable experience.

Mark I Video Productions also did a documentary on this final excursion over Tennessee Pass… The Royal Gorge Route Railroad now owns and operates this line, so it is quite a treat to see a fully loaded UP passenger train pulled by 844 and her accompanying E Units. It would REALLY be nice to see another steam-powered trip or two over these tracks again someday.

Very scene and enjoyable to watch. Seeing the UP 844 for it’s possibly last time on Tennessee Pass along with the Classic E Unit Trio is just a major and I mean major bonus. Following the Train down the Joint Line and into Pueblo, and then finally on the Tennessee Pass route. It’s just awesome. Having a Camera on the train although on the lead end is just another excellent way to coverage the footage that the main video photographers can’t reach. Great editing and smooth camera operator on all sections, even the person riding in the tool car did a great job as well. Listening to the 844 and E Units pull up the grade will always be enjoyable

Another great production from Pentrex. They did an excellent job documenting this once in a lifetime event. Most of the scenery on Tennessee Pass is second to none!

This is a beautiful well produced video of an area of the country that is colorful; and well suited for the rails. All rail fans need to add this video to their collection to make is complete. Steam in Tennessee is a wonderful experience.
