Travel from Portland to Yakima following 4449 on several days of action in Washington State. We begin with 4449 traveling from Portland to Kennewick, Washington along the BN mainline through the Columbia River region with majestic scenery. 4449 hauled coaches to the host railroad from Portland. The Washington Central, a private operator in 1990, was the host for trips operating on former Northern Pacific trackage. On Friday we watch 4449 on two round trips from Kennewick to Prosser, and watch it depart Kennewick at dusk to Yakima on a dinner train. On Saturday we watch 4449 on two runs to Ellensburg through the scenic Yakima Canyon. On Sunday the 4449 makes an all-day trip from Yakima to Cle Elum, traveling through the scenic Yakima and Cle Elum canyons on this round-trip. In addition to 4449 action we also see former Great Western 2-8-0 number 51 on two trips during this Fall weekend, as it was based in the area at this time.

There is even one meet with 4449. None of the these excursions have diesel assist like we have today on mainline trackage. Rounding out the coverage is 4449’s one-way trip from Yakima to Portland, ending with 4449 spinning on the Portland turntable and entering the roundhouse. This trip marked the only run for 4449 in 1990, and included some great action, with super scenery in Washington state. Former NP semaphores are a nice bonus as well.

Daylight #4449 will forever be a delight to watch, no matter when or where she is steamed up. This quality look back at 1990 is well worth the purchase price!

This DVD showcases 4449’s only trip during 1990, as it traveled to Kennewick, Washington for the Washington Central’s Steamfest, which also included Great Western 2-8-0 #51.

Happy 80th birthday, 4449! This October 1990 excursion trip was the only run of the 4449. Ironically, that same year the Daylight locomotive would also carry the Northern Pacific Hancock 3 chime whistle and I grew up with the whistle and I still love it to this day. That whistle would remain on the 4449 for the next 2 decades or 20 years. In this video, 4449 traveled from her home facility of Portland, Oregon to Yakima, Washington on the Washington Central railroad for Steamfest ‘90. Mark I Video and Greg Scholl were the only two cameramen for the events of Steamfest ‘90. On Wednesday, October 10, the locomotive traveled along the scenic Columbia River Gorge on former Spokane, Portland and Seattle trackage with a servicing stop at Wishram before tying down at Kennewick for a day of display on October 11. Skamania, Washington was the scenic location of the day, and Mark I Video and Greg Scholl had different angles of the Daylight runby and the whistle was so beautiful. October 12-14, 4449 would pull not only day trips on the Washington Central railroad such as Yakima and Cle Elum, but she would also handle the dinner train on the Yakima Canyon route. Former Great Western 2-8-0 consolidation #51 would also be the star of the event as it was featured on October 12 and 13. After the first part of the Steamfest ‘90 was completed on October 14, #4449 would make the return trip back home to Portland, Oregon. Some of the cars that were on the train during the events were left behind as her old friend from Oaks Park in Portland; Spokane, Portland and Seattle (SP&S) #700 would also repeat the same schedule on the 2nd weekend of the event and it was also 700’s first year as a excursion engine. Both of these engines are now part of the Oregon Heritage Museum collection in Portland.
