See Gila and Lordsburg districts from the 80s and 90s with cabooses, lower quadrant semaphores and on-train footage. Main and branch line action with grades, helpers, manifest, oilcan, beet, boxcar and stack trains. See Donner Pass, Cuesta and the Coastline, Beaumont Hill, Tehachapi, Stockton, Elvas Junction, Tucson, Santa Cruz branch, Ione branch, Lompoc (Whitehills) branch, and much more. Don’t miss Stockton Junction with SP, Santa Fe and UP trains pounding all the crossing diamonds with in the days when it featured three railroads and an interlocking tower as well. This video has a parade of power. Grades, helpers, manifest freights, locals and much more. Remember the real Southern Pacific in this railfan’s favorite SP video! This video features: The SP in Arizona, the Lordsburg District, the Coastline, Donner Line, Great Branch line Action, Stockton, Beet Trains, Oil Can Trains, the Santa Cruz Branch, and the Ione Branch.

Railfan & Railroad magazine says, “This video includes some really cool SDP45 pace shots, cab ride footage, a lot of interesting camera angles and neat graphics… all done in a fast pace editing style… This is a darn good video”. The review in Model Railroad News has equally nice things to say: “Charles Smiley does his magic, rescuing rare footage from obscurity, cleaning, sharpening, and editing it until the final product just sparkles. His story seems to flow right on through and the narration gives watchers the answers to the questions which naturally occur to them.”

  1. Curtis Watson

Curiously, the Ione Branch is mentioned on the package but not seen in the program. Nevertheless, Charles Smiley presents, as always, a spectacular film documenting the SP in multiple locations. My favorite part was the bridge in Arizona where one main crossed another. You won’t be disappointed with this one!

  2. Dan

Charles Smiley knows how to tell a story, and has hit on a formula that involves more than just video of passing trains … sure, the footage is historic, irreplaceable, creatively shot and well edited. But combine it with informative maps and graphics and intelligent narration and you end up with one of Smiley’s signature productions … part railfan video, part history lesson and part documentary. “Southern Pacific Scrapbook” is a winner, and deserves a place in any railfan video collection.

  3. Dylan Jones

Shows a lot of classic SP footage from the beginning to the end of “The Friendly.” Lot’s of Scarlet and Grey locomotives. Lot’s of friendly crew members also. Very informative, as all of Mr. Smiley’s work is.
