It’s 1995, the last year for an independent Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Giant BNSF is still in the future, the Panhandle Sub is busy and we are there to see the action. We’ll see lots of “bonnets” and famous Curtis Hill before the double-tracking.

This sub stretches 205 miles from Waynoka, Oklahoma to Amarillo, Texas. Passenger stations in the Southwest style and grain elevators dot the line. This informative program is narrated, and many locations and trains are marked with on-screen captions.

This program was shot using good “prosumer” equipment of the time, but is not up to the clarity of today’s high-definition video. It is however an excellent snapshot of an important time and place in the nation’s railroad history.

The BNSF merger is on the horizon, but Santa Fe still rules the Panhandle Sub and Curtis Hill. It’s a steady parade of blue-and-yellow and Warbonnet paint schemes in a landscape of prairies and rolling hills that makes them look right at home. And there’s just the right amount of narration to explain current operations and the importance of the line. This is a nice visit to an earlier time in North American railroading, and a fine addition to any railfan video library.

a very interesting stretch of railroad, primarily thanks to Curtis Hill being a part of it. Long heavy trains working hard and showing their great power. Hard to beat this kind of railroad action preserved on video. I love the old stations. A great job by the producer in his presentation of this historical line.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have been to Amarillo on business a few times and railfanned the BNSF at the time and the ENORMOUS amount of trains on the ex-ATSF mainline so when I found out that MoKan released this DVD of this piece of the ATSF during the ATSF I had to have it!!! This DVD is almost 2 hours of non-stop trains and IT’S ALL SANTA FE!!!! I love the meets, the overtakes, and the sheer volume of trains on this mostly single-track railroad!!!

The panhandle sub is a major sub of the Santa Fe transcon, It runs from Oklahoma to Texas, This video shows how the line was before the BN and SF merger and when the Warbonnets were in full force. See anything from classic 1959 built GP20’s to the brand new SD75’s. This sub is s a interesting line with Curtis Hill located on it.
