Steam ruled the rails in Sacramento when the California State Railroad Museum hosted Railfair ’99 and the NRHS and R&LHS scheduled their national conventions in Sacramento to coincide with the event. Many of the major steam locomotives operating in the US plus dozens of other locomotives were in attendance to amaze and entertain an appreciative throng of over 175,000 visitors! Pentrex was on the spot capturing the events at Railfair ’99 and the exciting NRHS/R&LHS excursions, including:
* UP 3985 and 844 from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Sacramento
* SP Daylight from Portland to Railfair ’99
* Amtrak excursions to Franklin Canyon and Altamont Pass
* UP 844 excursion to Tehama
* SF 3751 from Los Angeles to Sacramento
* UP 4466 excursion on the Sacramento Southern Railroad
* Boiler failure on the 844
* UP Feather River Canyon excursion
* Yolo Shortline steam excursion
* SP 2467 and SP GP9 5623 from Oakland to Sacramento
* Shay races
* Opening and Closing ceremonies and much more! Here’s your best opportunity to experience the steam railroading event of the decade!

    You’ll probably have to set aside a full day for this, but it’s well worth it! The scenes here are spectacular in every sense of the word, and will likely never be seen again. There are so many engines, and so many unique scenes. This is a must-have!

    This THREE AND A HALF HOUR extravaganza is one you do NOT want to pass up! This production, along with prequel, “Steam to Railfair ’99”, are videos you will want to watch over and over again, especially if you are a die-hard railfan. There is something in here for EVERYONE… Steam, diesel, electric… Bigger locomotives and rolling stock, medium sized equipment, smaller equipment, etc… You will very much enjoy the “primary” shots of UP 844 and 3985’s long, intense journey all the way from from Cheyenne, Wyoming. You will also enjoy the rare appearance of Southern Pacific Class P-8 #2467 out of Oakland. As always, Southern Pacific GS-4 “Daylight” #4449 puts on a great show as well. There are (of course) more camera angles of her journey from Portland, Oregon.

    You will witness the Living Legend’s final excursion of the 20th Century on June 23rd, 1999… As sadly, the day after her trip to Tehama and return, she would suffer a boiler tube failure, which would disable her until she could be overhauled again. The Challenger had to step up and tow the dead 844 and UP train back to Cheyenne after the conclusion of Railfair.

    The California State Railroad Museum, along with the City of Sacramento and all other sponsors/partners, executed one heck of an event… And Pentrex was there to capture almost every precious moment. It is definitely nice to look back at this important time and place in history. No one had any idea that twenty years later in 2019, Big Boy #4014 would be displacing #3985 as the world’s largest, heaviest, and most powerful operating steam locomotive! God works through mankind in unconventional ways sometimes, doesn’t He?

    If you enjoyed taking a journey back in time to Railfair 1981 and 1991, then you will FOR SURE enjoy this presentation of Railfair 1999! 🙂

    In my opinion this is the best railfair by far better than 1981 and 1991.

    This program features both the ferry moves to Railfair by the participating locomotives and the events that ocurred during Railfair, such as Shay Races and excursions.

    Great coverage of Sacramento Steam ’99! We see UP 844, UP 3985, UP 4466, SP 4449, SP 2467, SF 3751, Shay Races, Double Headers, and so much more! There is a scene of a steam crane lifting a diesel locomotive, singing track gang, and the California State Railway Museum’s access track being lowered into placed over the SP mainline tracks.

    Excellent coverage of Railfair ’99 by Pentrex. This DVD follows the trips taken by UP 844 & 3985, SP 4449, and ATSF 3751 on their way to Sacramento. The aerial footage of Santa Fe 3751 over Cajon Pass is a good taste of what Pentrex’s other aerial films have to offer.

    Besides these main steam stars, Pentrex extensively covers all the participating locomotives and events featured at Railfair which otherwise would have been overshadowed by the visiting fan favorites. Overall this is a quite satisfying three hours of steam (and non-steam) action.
