Mt. Shasta area rails have it all: High tech modern diesels, older second hand diesels and even a steam excursion! This is the Union Pacific line between Redding, California and Klamath Falls. Besides the UP, we see lots of BNSF diversion traffic. In addition the big boys, we see California, Oregon & Pacific at Black Butte, and the McCloud River steam excursion operation. Steam plus high tech diesels whining up and down the Sacramento River Canyon and through the Shasta National Forest. What more could you ask of Mount Shasta?

In Northern California near the Oregon State line, there are a parade of mainline freights on Union Pacific, BNSF, Canadian Pacific, Central Oregon & Pacific Shortline, Amtrak’s Coast Starlight, and even a very short visit to the since been closed McCloud Railway with 2-8-2 number 18 in action as the locomotive had since been moved to the Virginia & Truckee in Nevada. A couple of fallen flag units are also included.

Locations include Redding Trestle, Shasta Lake, O’Brien, Salt Creek, Delta, Lamoine which is alongside the Sacramento River & interstate 5, Gibson, Sims in a heavy downpour, Dunsmuir Yard & Junction, the 2% grade on Cantera loop, Mott near sawmill curve, Azalia, Upton, Black Butte, Hotlum, Dry Canyon Viaduct, Andesite, Grass Lake, Penoyar, Bray, Mt. Hebron, & Warden Oregon.

Overall, Photographer Peter Cooke did a decent job narrating this program.

Fantastic scenery, with a nice mix of newer and older diesel locomotives, all captured with Highball Productions’ flair for dramatic video. You’ll find a nice blend of trackside shots that emphasize the power of the trains and panoramic shots that show off the grandeur of the landscape. And if that’s not enough, steam action on the McCloud River is a nice bonus. Five enthusiastic stars!
