See Pere Marquette 2-8-4 number 1225 operate on several freight specials that are the first-ever photo trains for this Lima-built Berkshire type steam locomotive. Several 1940s and 1950s period freight cars are used and the engine is put back to its steam-era appearance. This video was shot in April 2007, and features a weekend of photo freights from Owosso, Michigan which is the home of the Steam Railroading Institute, where Pere Marquette 2-8-4 number 1225 resides. This freight Photo Special weekend is a first for the 1225! We arrived early so that we captured some of the activity on Friday with the train being assembled for the weekend. We see 1225 moving around, and Flagg Coal Company 0-4-0T Number 75, which was given its original number, 2 for this weekend. Both engines are seen at Owosso as switching duties are performed.

On Saturday and Sunday we start before dawn, with sunrise scenes that accent the profile of the fine lines of this steam locomotive. We work two different lines on both Saturday and Sunday including the former New York Central line, and the former Ann Arbor line from Owosso, Michigan. During the days we are treated to several different runbys, that include reflection shots, grain elevators, and much more. In addition some period vintage vehicles are used with some of the runbys. There are scenes of 1225 on the turntable as it is serviced between runs. Two camera coverage includes extra scenes at some locations, plus some spots where we could combine two camera shots into one runby. You won’t want to miss this first-ever photo special for Pere Marquette 1225. Did you know: The 1225 is the locomotive that was used as the template for the movie “Polar Express”.

Beautifully done! Greg Scholl and his camera crew really know how to make even a simple photo freight with our great Michigan Berkshire as exciting as an outing at Western Maryland Scenic with 2-8-0 #734!

Personally, I am not a fan of modern day steam excursion runs. However, I also understand the importance of keep these old relics alive and going for the historical education. Greg Scholl has done a great job producing this video and I believe that all who really like steam excursions will highly enjoy this video.

If there’s only one of the fewer popular programs from Greg Himself, it would definitely be this now over 10 year old program. Not only this was shot by Greg & Randy, but the recreation of steam in the 1940s was shown with Flagg Coal 75 that was renumbered to 2 for the special, as well and seeing the carland Grain Elevators. Back then, many railfans including myself though this was the final 21st century steam video from Greg. But 3 years later in 2010, he is back in the modern steam business starting with the Final run of L&N 152 during the last days of the Kentucky Railway Museum’s 2010 season.
