This is rare color film from the 1950s that includes some rare steam: See big Santa Fe 2-10-4 locomotives on lease at that time to the Pennsylvania Railroad! Ed Birch, Sr. made several trips to Ohio in the mid 1950s to capture the last of steam. In particular, those 2-10-4’s on the PRR’s Sandusky Branch. He rode on the B&O through Willard, Deshler, Fostoria and Toledo. He captured B&O steam, NKP steam, NYC steam and of course, the Pennsy.

Ohio & Michigan are not exactly known for scenery, but are excellent locations for heavy trains. The 1950’s was no exception. Lots of excellent railroad scenes in this video of steam power working hard to pull long heavy trains on the NYS & PRR. Thrown in for good measure is a bit of Grand Trunk Western for variety. A great video indeed.

I absolutely loved this video with steam on the B&O, as well as a nyc Niagara on passenger duty. The Pennsylvania railroad had a motive power shortage so seeing Santa Fe 2-10-4 on lease was cool. Even the NKP did make a pretty scene and well as the sounds of B&O steam locomotives. This is an excellent video.
