The program is shot entirely between Cramerton and Belmont in North Carolina, as the signals at CP “South Fork” are situated on the border of these two old textile mill towns. The unusual terrain, two river crossings and a horseshoe curve make for abundant photographic opportunities. This is milepost 390.6 of Norfolk Southern’s Atlanta to Washington mainline. Priority double stack intermodal trains rule the rails at South Fork. Of course, manifest and coal trains are also documented.
Special attention was given to trains with “foreign” road power; over half of the trains have locomotives from UP, BNSF, CN and others. SOU and IT “Heritage” units and the NS office car special with F9’s make an appearance. This program also features bonus material of Pennsylvania Railroad E8A #5809 working a special excursion. Over 45 trains are presented. Trains are identified by subtitles.

A fascinating variety of locomotives, interesting consists and a photogenic backdrop … this program has all the ingredients of a great railfan outing. The videography and editing are very well done, and the camera locations showcase the setting as well as the trains. There’s no narration, but on-screen graphics provide train, date and location information. For enjoyable armchair railfanning, you can’t go wrong with this one!
