This video captures much of the first operations for this newly restored Nickel Plate 2-8-4 by the Ft. Wayne Historical Society in the 1970’s. The first run in 1979, then in 1980 and runs on the Toledo, Peoria, & Western Railroad with break-in freights and excursions.Travels toward Bellevue on a cold snowy day in 1979 and then 1980 begins with a one- way run with coaches from Bellevue back to Fort Wayne as it continues westward to Illinois.

We also see 765 on the turntable, and preparing for a freight run to Effner (Illinois) which turned into a 2-day journey. When the engine was sent back to Ft. Wayne, it went at the head of a freight train, and we see some nice running here, including pacing scenes. This was fun stuff to see with a big mainline engine hauling real revenue freight once again. Shot on super 8 sound movies.

Wow! What a “look back” it was, indeed! The late 70s and early 80s were the BEST! This really shows you how the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society got started in giving their organization and NKP 765 the impeccable reputation they both deserved. Out of humble beginnings came something bigger than anyone could have EVER imagined! SO cool! 🙂

Great program about the early history of the 765, with history about the restoration and then all the trial runs that took place on the TP&W. Another great program by Greg Scholl.

This Newly Released DVD in 2014, Features the Test Runs & First Excursions of 765 During the Transition of the 1970’s to the 1980’s (December 1, 1979-June 20, 1980). There Are a couple of scenes that nobody noticed. 1. There was a Musical segment during the rest of the first chasing Day as Greg’s Super 8 Sound Film Camera’s Mike Refused to Co-operate. And 2. After doing some Pushing Service on The TP&W, 765 is Running light, Going Backwards, & Blowing its own 2 Whistles at The Same Time.
