Newly restored Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 in 1985 made her first appearance of what would be many on the famed New River Train operated out of Huntington, West Virginia. We see 765 up close and then climb aboard for a ride behind steam on the mainline, as the 1944 Lima puts on quite a show as we ride the train from Huntington to Hinton.

The program opens with #765 hot at the old C&O depot in Huntington. After the engine moves around the yard the day before her mainline outing, we see the New River Train barking out of Huntington before moving to the on board sequence. The majority of this program was shot from one of the coaches toward the front of the train, with a windproofed microphone outside the car to capture the sounds of the big 2-8-4 working hard with a long train.

I have had this DVD for many years, and it is always a nice “go to” when you want some excellent sound of our favorite Berk working hard with a 30 car passenger train. Great video footage, too! It lasts just about the entire route from Huntington to Hinton, West Virginia. You will thoroughly enjoy this presentation…. It will make you feel as if you are actually riding in that car vestibule right along with everyone else.

In this installment of the DCP heritage series, the 1944 Lima Ohio built Berkshire was making its official debut of leading the Huntington to Hinton West Virginia new river train, which lasted for several years until 1993. While the majority of the DCP version is from the coaches & later in the cab, there are a handful of runbys included. Initially enough, future famous America by rail producer Greg Scholl was also there for 765’s first journey through the gorge which was first shown in one of his earliest but short lived titles: new river express, & later some of the highlights were shown on 2 titles from 2009: NKP combo & the re-edited version of 765 autumn spectacular.
